Invitation to join the Ten Year Society

Dear Pigsonthewing/Archive 1,

I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Ten Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikispecies project for ten years or more.

Best regards,

Dan Koehl (talk) 15:12, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I accept! Thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:51, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Autopatroller

Dear Pigsonthewing, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Autopatrollers.

This user has autopatrolled rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

As an autopatroller you may use the autopatroller user box on your user page. That is of course optional, but if you like it you can copy and paste the following code on your user page: {{User Autopatroller}}

Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 12:59, 22 October 2015 (UTC).Reply

As of now the alternative account User:PigsotWing is also a member of the autopatroller user group.(verify)Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 19:36, 12 January 2017 (UTC).Reply

Patrol stats

Thanks to Cgt on danish Wp, we can now see statistics on patrolling: https://cgt.name/patrolstats/wikispecies.html MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 20:07, 10 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please note that the patrolling stats URL has now changed from the da:WP user Cgt's personal web page (listed above) to a URL within the Wikimedia project itself, more specifically https://tools.wmflabs.org/patrolstats/specieswiki.html at Wikimedia Tool Labs. The old "cgt.name" URL no longer works without a proper SSL certificate. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 22:49, 17 April 2016 (UTC).Reply

Welcome template languages

Hello Andy. I see that you reverted this edit to Llywelyn2000's talk page, which is fine. It seems like all of the different non-English language versions of the {{Welcome}} template has a small error, namely that the code string [[Category:Welcome templates|{{PAGENAME}}]] isn't placed within <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags. As a result all of the pages where the templates are used are automatically placed in Category:Welcome templates, which is of course wrong. For instance, now Llywelyn2000's talk page is a member of the "Welcome templates" category, which seems odd since that category really should only contain the welcome templates themselves – but not the pages where they are used.

The trouble is that these templates cannot be updated manually, at least not to 100%. They are all translations of the page Template:Welcome and – at least as far as I know – can only be updated using the translation tool, for instance here for the Cymraeg version. The translation tool doesn't show any code relating to categories, which of course makes it difficult to edit them... This is true for {{Welcome/cy}} as well as all the other non-English versions. Do you have any suggestion on how to fix this issue?
All the best, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 06:30, 1 July 2016 (UTC).Reply

@Tommy Kronkvist: I recently raised a related issue, at Wikispecies:Village Pump#Translation undone. I suggest we centralise discussion there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:42, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrolled

Thanks!!! Burmeister (talk) 21:07, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Andy! Today or perhaps yesterday a red link to Template:Single namespace has suddenly turned up on the Category:Candidates for speedy deletion page. The category page utilises the {{Empty category}} template created by you, and the wiki code in that template includes the string {{lc:{{{nocat|false}}}}}|false|{{Single namespace|category}}. Do you know what's going on here? Neither category or template has been edited for several months, nor the English Wikipedia Template:Empty category upon which you based your template. Cheers, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 0i2:36, 9 January 2017 (UTC).

This seems to have been caused by deletions by User:Koavf, which were made without explanation, I'm restoring them, at least for now, so they can be dscussed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:04, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Housekeeping I was deleting categories and templates based on Tommy's point above about how they appeared to not be in use. If you think it should be restored and used then I am in favor of that. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:39, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template:Repository

Hi, good work on template!! What you think in insert a entry to The Global Registry of Biodiversity Repositories (GRBio) in the template? Burmeister (talk) 00:21, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Burmeister: Sure. Do you have an example, please? Preferably a page already using such a link. It seems as though there should perhaps be a Wikidata property for this too. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 00:27, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't have an example, sorry. I just find the site and made the suggestion for thinking it would be informative. Burmeister (talk) 00:33, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Burmeister and Pigsonthewing: There are only about 15 Wikispecies pages which include the text string "GRBio", so if a suitable page example exists it is fairly easy to find. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:28, 15 January 2017 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist and Burmeister: In that case, I suggest Burmeister first seeks consensus on the Village Pump. Also, looking at http://grbio.org/institution/oxford-botanic-garden there seem to be three identifiers at play: oxford-botanic-garden (the URL slug), BAP<IH> (the "InstitutionCode") and 13830 (in both the LSID and the "Cool URI"). We'd need clarity and agreement on which we were to store. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:28, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

RFC on Checkusers

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC: Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers.

It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's Wikispecies:Checkusers. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.

I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here: Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy.

Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.

This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

Wikispecies Oversighter

Wikispecies has no local Oversighter. Since I had the communitys confidence regarding the previous application for Checkusers rights, as per local Oversight policy on META, I hereby apply to get Oversighters user rights, as a request to the Wikispecies community.

Application is located at Requests for Comment.

Please also note that Oversighter actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Oversighters. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two oversighters, for mutual accountability. I don't want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for oversighters rights.

Draw a line

Andy Let us please draw a line under the unpleasantness associated with the blocking of Mariusm. Many of us still have bad memories associated with Mr Thorpe and the way he treated fellow editors. I for one tend to err on the side of courtesy when it comes to blocking editors and go to the talk page. Unless, of course it is vandalism, spam and the like. Regards Andyboorman (talk) 20:21, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

───────────────────────── @Andyboorman: You may wish to address your comment to the person who posted these accusations and falsehoods:

  • revenge for not supporting him
  • aim in this block is only to harass and humiliate me
  • he can't be trusted
  • haven't [sic] made a single taxonomic edit here
  • only seeking the thrill of power
  • isn't interested in taxonomy at all
  • indiscriminate exercise of authority
  • accusation based on false facts
  • petty enmities

In case you're still not clear about what's going on, that wasn't me. As for "go to the talk page", you will notice I did so, immediately after, as I pointed out to you a short while ago, "blocking an unauthorised bot, which was running at 50+ edits per minute". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:13, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Maybe some of the "accusations" were a bitter pill to swallow but they are taken out of context, and strung together, they don't reflect the true sentiment in my posts. I didn't really mind being blocked except that it interrupted my editing process. You can go ahead and block me again based on my foul mouth or drive me out of WS by other means, it will not be a big deal for me. My motto is don't make a big deal out of nothing and we're not running here states or empires. All in all it's just a small wiki that nobody else except us gives a damn about. So lets keep all this in the right perspective. Mariusm (talk) 06:57, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

New taxonomic project for me!

Hi Andy, I do not know whether or not you meant it, but your recent use of {{Ampelosicyinae}}as an example of an used template has thrown up a possible new project for me! Cucurbitaceae has undergone a recent update and so I should edit the subfamilies and tribes as a matter of urgency. I do not know whether or not to say thanks. There are a lot of problems with older classifications lurking in the background that will need resolving as well. Oh well keeps me off the streets so to speak. About the Wikispecies and Wikidata talk in Wikimania 2017

Hi Andy!

I attend to your [talk-round table in Wikimania 2017 about Wikispecies and Wikidata], where you and another participants talk about the resistance of the Wikispecies community to synchronize Wikispecies with Wikidata and about the reason of the existence of Wikispecies when Wikidata might accomplish the same function with more flexibility and with the capacity to export the data wherever by anyone. If I am wrong with something, correct me, that day I was a bit fuzzy-headed.

I remember that you mention a current discussion in Wikispecies about it, Wikidata and Wikispecies, but I can not note where is located. Could you share with me the discussion page where you and the community is talking about it?

Thanks in advance! It was a pleasure to listen you in my first Wikimania.

Potentilla and Drymocallis

Hi You are completely wrong to edit out Drymocallis calycina in favour of Potentilla calycina. The former is npw the accepted combination. I am editing it and Drymocallis with the supporting references at the moment. Please give an half an hour or so. Unless, of course, you have references to support your view point and then we will need a disputed taxon page. Thanks Andyboorman (talk) 20:24, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm not editing anything in favour of anything else. I have removed a circular redirect (A redirects to B; B redirects to A). This was explained in each of my edit summaries. My only viewpoint was that such redirects are both illogical and harmful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:59, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Of course they are illogical and harmful, but it would be better to sort out the taxonomy rather than just blindly deleting as a part of housekeeping. Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 21:09, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nor was I "blindly" deleting; my deletion was informed and considered. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:27, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough one mistake does not make a deluge. I will check through the some of the others where I have experience. Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 10:49, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nor was my informed and considered action a "mistake". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:55, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Potentilla calycina is widely accepted as Drymocallis calycina, although not all proposals by Soják (2010) are taken up by other botanists, so deleting the later was a mistake, as you could have added data as I did. Given that I can not find more details of the original publication. Taxonomy in botany is sometimes an opinion more the pity! Likewise with Microlepis and Blyttia where again the taxonomies are an opinion and work in progress, but Alstonia longifolia belongs in the list of Alstonia R.Br. even if red linked. Sorry if I have caused offense none intended and apologies if I have left a bit of a problem. Andyboorman (talk) 12:06, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

About Shūhei Nomura

Hi Andy. I asked in the Wikipedia in Spanish for the given name Shūhei (修平) and the correct way in which it should be written. Two users with knowledge of Japanese indicated to me that the Shûhei form does not correspond to any Japanese romanization system. The closest is the Hepburn romanization, in which it is written as Shūhei. Apparently, the letter ū is not available on all keyboards and fonts, but that is sometimes replaced by û, but this is technically incorrect when Hepburn romanization is used. In wikt:修#Japanese you can read that most of the time it corresponds to 'shū' and sometimes 'shu', but never shû. Quote (originaly in Spanish): "The equivalent Nihon-shiki or Kunrei-shiki of Shūhei is not Shûhei, but Syûhei. The Shûhei form is, rather, an improper Hepburn in which the macrons (not available in most keyboard configurations or in many fonts) have been replaced by circumflexes (that are somewhat more extended)" (diff). I write it because you have created his entry in Wikispecies and Wikidata with that name and I do not want to change it without consulting you. --Metrónomo (talk) 02:42, 17 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Metrónomo: That seems reasonable; thank you. I have moved the page to Shūhei Nomura and made all (I hope!) the necessary changes elsewhere, retaining Shûhei Nomura as a redirect. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:07, 17 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

"Taxa authored" formatting

Hi Andy! Do you know why there is a superfluous line break rendered after the {{Taxa authored}} (a.k.a. "Taxa") template, while this is not the case for the {{Taxa authored 2}} template? The latter looks a lot better and IMHO also has a better placement of the text rendered by the transcluded {{Inc}} template.

For examples see Robert Ridgway (Taxa authored) and Christian Brüning (Taxa authored 2).

I changed here the formatting of the authors to our wikispecies standard: full names for the link, abbreviation visible. Kind regards, --Thiotrix (talk) 12:01, 2 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Senecio mollis

This combination is either a synonym for Jacobaea mollis (Willd.) B.Nord. or Senecio sinuatilobus DC. depending on the original author. In this case the page refers to Senecio mollis Willd. which is J. mollis. Your redirect then seems to be an error unless you have better information than me. Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 14:49, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I have stuck a couple of scientific papers here the explain the synonymy. I suggest that you revert and create pages for both of the above taxa. Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 15:02, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Andyboorman: I have no view about the taxonomy; but redirecting page 'A' to page 'B', when page 'B' already redirects to page 'A' is harmful. As I explained to you the last time I fixed such an error. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:30, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
It is far more polite and sensible to drop a message rather than making a taxonomic faux pas surely? Anyway I have made the corrections! Andyboorman (talk) 15:39, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
And again: Deleting a circular redirect was not a "faux pas". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:14, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
And again, but leaving a taxonomic mess is - talking is better than a spat. Just message me if you find that I have inadvertently left or created circular redirects - simple really. Andyboorman (talk) 17:42, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I didn't "leave a mess"; I restored the status quo ante as it was before immediately before your bad edit. As for "talking", I reverted your edit - appropriately using the tools with which we are provided - as you clearly saw, leaving an edit summary explaining why I did so. I'll do the same again if you repeat the error. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:43, 18 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Setting up Disambiguation page for 2 different taxa and eliminate invalid redirect

Hello,

I'm quite new to Wikispecies and trying slowly to master the intricacies of coding for pages. My progress so far is decent but I need help with disambiguation pages. Thiotrix has helped me appreciably but I dislike having to always bother him. You were the first administrator to welcome me here, so I thought I would bother you for a while (LOL).

I have set up a disambuation page for Pachylophus but don't know how to get it to show up when I use the search box. Originally Pachylophus was just a redirect to the genus Oenothera set up under Plantae. What I need to know is how to get the disambiguation page to show up in search when you type in Pachylophus and how to cancel the redirect to genus Oenothera. Thanks for any help you can give me. Nytexcome (talk) 12:13, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Nytexcome: I have no idea why your disambiguation page was not showing up in the search box. However, I have moved it, to replace the redirect at Pachylophus. Thank you for your contrbutions! Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:52, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello again,
In the family Achilidae there are 3 cases of needed disambiguation pages (2 of which I have set up). They are Abas – Alticeps – Callichlamys
. I achieved my goal which was "in the search box to redirect a user to a disambiguation page" if they were to type in Abas, Alticeps or Callichlamys. However, something apparently does not look correct on the individual pages. Please give what help you can so that this can be done properly. Thanks againNytexcome (talk) 02:26, 5 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Bismarckia and daughter taxa on Wikidata

Hi Andy. Since you're one of the more Wikidata-savvy users at Wikispecies, may I ask for your opinion regarding this thread in the Wikidata project chat? Perhaps fixing it is a walk in the park, but I wonder whether there are any standard solutions or praxis that can be applied, since most likely the same problem also manifests itself with other taxa. Deletion request

Hi. Regarding this edit. I can't see that the IP-address is blocked or even have made any edits on this wiki, and the template was added by a cross-wiki vandal. Why keep the page? -- Tegel (talk) 11:20, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Tegel: The reason you gave - "Cross-wiki vandalism" - was vague; you did not indicate that it applied to the user placing the template, and not to the IP whose page was proposed for deletion Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:32, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi. It's one of the standard templates that I have in my js-file for tagging pages quickly.
A template for deletion is, at least from my perspective, targeting the creation of the page. So the one that has done something wrong is the creator of the page, independent of name space and location. -- Tegel (talk) 19:54, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Vernacular names

I've imported a load of modules into Wikispecies that might get some folks annoyed. Anyway I've now got all the tools I need to work here in future.

This is the VN template used on Commons imported here:

  • {{VN/sandboxWD}}

To use it with a different qid, use this parameter:

  • {{VN/sandboxWD |useWikidata=Q25317}} - to display names for Q25317
  • {{VN/sandboxWD |useWikidata=Q159570}} - to display names for Q159570
  • {{VN/sandboxWD |useWikidata=Q15568891}} - to display names for Q15568891

Unfortunately, the code doesn't work outside of mainspace. I suppose I could nobble that restriction, but it seems useful.

The language parameters don't yet work, but I'll go work on that. --RexxS (talk) 14:48, 19 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

───────────────────────── @RexxS: The version with a QID works; see [1]. The version without [2], does not. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:55, 20 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Right. That's an artefact of the Commons code, which doesn't fetch Wikidata by default (i.e. it's opt-in). Until I can find the time to change that behaviour cleanly, perhaps you can carry on testing using the formulation {{VN/sandboxWD |useWikidata=true}}, which will work without having to supply a QID. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 20:50, 20 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Finding and fixing syntax errors in templates

Hi Andy! Thanks for your recent reference template fixes, such as for example 1847&oldid=6679605 this one. May I ask how you hunt them down? Are you simply searching for the {{BASEPAGENAMEE}} magic word (note the ending double-E) within template namespace, or you do have a more refined method up your sleeve that I'm not yet aware of? :-) The reason for my question is of course that I frequently take on similar maintenance-related chores myself, and any help finding pages with errors is welcome. MoreMenu gadget

Hello Pigsonthewing! I am messaging you because you are the only interface-admin on this wiki. I am the author of meta:MoreMenu. I see Wikispecies is pulling in the old version on English Wikipedia, which will soon be replaced by the new version that lives on Meta. Could you assist in getting the new version installed here?

Unfortunately the local gadget can't have the same name as the global one. So to do this correctly, the 31 users who have MoreMenu installed will need to re-install it because we have to change the gadget definition. Let me know if this is too much of a problem, and we can come up with a different solution, if you'd like.

To migrate to the new version, first remove the "MoreMenu" and "MoreMenu-pagestyles" definitions at MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, and delete MediaWiki:Gadget-MoreMenu.js, MediaWiki:Gadget-MoreMenu.css and MediaWiki:Gadget-MoreMenu-pagestyles.css as they will no longer be used. Then you can install the gadget from scratch. Since Wikispecies is a multilingual wiki, I don't think you need to add the peer gadget as you are doing now (the widths of the menus will vary based on the language).

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you! MusikAnimal (talk) 20:38, 9 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@MusikAnimal: Thank you. I'll do so in a day or two, if there are no objections (see Village Pump notice). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:50, 9 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: Looks great! Thank you :) You may wish to add a description at MediaWiki:Gadget-MoreMenu-local. Something like:

MoreMenu: add Page and User dropdown menus to the toolbar with links to common tasks, analytic tools and logs.

I think logically it may fit under the "Browsing" section, but it doesn't matter :) I'm going to go ahead and mark the Wikispecies migration as complete. Thanks again, MusikAnimal (talk) 17:58, 12 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MusikAnimal: Description added; someone might like to mark it up as translatable. I'm not clear what we need to do to "fit [it] under the "Browsing" section". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:40, 12 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Oh that's interesting; looks like the message for "Twinkle" at MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition is "Browsing". So you could put it in the Twinkle section, or rework the messaging, but as I said it doesn't really matter :)

Would you mind linking to meta:MoreMenu in the description? I ask only because it will make it easier for users to report issues. Many thanks, MusikAnimal (talk) 19:36, 12 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

The establishment and harmonization of a joint regional strategy for the conservation of marine ecosystems under the EU legislation framework is a major challenge for the whole Balkan-Mediterranean area. Project RECONNECT aims to establish a transnational cooperative network for the conservation of vulnerable ecosystems in MPAs and Natura 2000 sites of Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Albania, and implement a common conservation strategy. One of the key goals is the development of an innovative managerial tool - a Decision Support System (DSS) integrating ecological, genetic and socio-economic aspects, to be applied on the MPAs and Natura 2000 sites. The involvement of research institutes and management authorities in the RECONNECT partnership ensures the scientific expertise for the resolution of real challenges and problems, and the successful development of sustainable management practices for MPAs facing significant pressures and threats. The main objectives of the project are: - identify and map key marine habitats in the study areas, and evaluate the services they provide by socio-economic and cultural approaches; - develop instruments based on the genetic and functional biodiversity to complement the current management tools, e.g. genetic connectivity of key marine species; - involve citizens in environmental monitoring and conservation activities, and draw in stakeholders to promote blue growth; - create a platform for data storage, management and analysis; - create a Decision Support System integrating biological, ecological and socio-economic data to enhance the management of MPAs and Natura 2000 sites. The approaches developed within RECONNECT comply with current key European environmental strategies such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Europe 2020 Strategy (EU2020) and the Danube Region Strategy (EUDSR). The outcomes of the project are beneficial for local, regional and national authorities (municipalities, prefectures, ministries etc.), since they support the efficient and sustainable management of marine ecosystems. Moreover, the active involvement of citizens in the project’s framework increases public awareness and promotes the protection of these vulnerable but extremely valuable ecosystems. The citizen science initiatives focus the public attention on the environmental pressures, and stimulate a sense of common ownership for the targeted marine habitats. The main achievement of project RECONNECT is the improved capacity of local management authorities by the promotion of efficient governance and sustainable use of natural resources and cultural heritage through a transnational approach. The project provides publicly available resources as part of its outputs, such as: - interactive maps integrating essential biodiversity, socio-economic and cultural variables – accessible at MedOBIS (http://medobis.portal.lifewatchgreece.eu/) after registration - citizen science platform and data: https://cs-reconnect.hcmr.gr/ - functional trait database of key species from the study areas: https://traitbank-reconnect.hcmr.gr/

Replacing page contents with templates

Hi Andy, I have two minor questions that are related to each other:

  1. I noticed that some taxa categories use the {{taxa by author}} template while others use standard [[brackets]], would it be desirable if I replaced the pages with brackets and categories with templates (like I've done here)?
  2. The same question as above, but for replacing {{BASEPAGENAME}} templates with species' names whenever I come across those.

ReneeWrites (talk) 09:10, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@ReneeWrites: Yes to both; in particular, {{BASEPAGENAME}} is deprecated. Incidentally, note how I've reformatted your post, above, to use # for numbered list items. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:21, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello Andy, and again thanks for all the good work you do around here! However, there seems to be some oddities going on with the {{Fix}} template you imported from en:Template:Fix back in January 2018. Could you have a look at it please? For an example of what I mean, see for example the "Dead link" template added to the Mesoplodon bidens "Links" section. Best regard, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:53, 6 April 2021 (UTC).Reply

Author2

I notice this template (Author2) was removed as "unused". I can assure you it was well in use on dozens of pages last time I stopped by. This was not a proper removal, I (creator of the template) was not notified, and there was no discussion. The template had added function compared to template:A and saved a lot of work for me by removing the need to add a separate line for the author-taxa category. ASAIK some user personally decided this template wasn't needed and replaced it on their own, then requested removal by grounds of "unused". --Pitke (talk) 21:29, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I dispute that the template deletion was improper. Please see Wikispecies:Village Pump#Template:Author2. Discussion should continue there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:42, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Template:A

Hello Andy. I'm not entirely sure this is new, but it looks like something has happened to the {{a}} and {{aut}} templates, adding a mysterious extra space after the author names. For example

{{a|Carolus Linnaeus|Linnaeus}}, {{a|Peter Forsskål|Forsskål}} and
{{aut|Linnaeus}}, {{aut|Forsskål}}

which renders as Linnaeus, Forsskål and Linnaeus, Forsskål with spacing on both sides of the comma. Do you know what this is all about? Writing to you since you've been editing {{a}} recently – eventough I don't think your edits are to blame, since it's also present in {{aut}} which hasn't been touched since May last year.

Respectfully, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:35, 5 June 2021 (UTC).Reply
