(Not) linking to categories and templates

Hi. Regarding your recent edit of the Village Pump archive No. 46, the easiest way to show a category link without actually also adding the page to that category, is by starting the link with a colon, like this: [[:Category:Taxa by author]]. The link will be showed without the leading colon (like this: Category:Taxa by author) however the page will not be actually added to the category.

For templates, you can use the {{tl}} link template instead. It works in pretty much the same way, showing a link to a template's page without actually "starting" the template. For example, the code strings {{tl|Dendrolimus}} and {{tl|Mikkola & Ståhls, 2008}} adds links to the {{Dendrolimus}} and {{Mikkola & Ståhls, 2008}} template pages without actually inducing the templates' functionality. Please note that this only works with templates. It doesn't work with any of the MediaWiki "magic words" that look like templates, for example {{DEFAULTSORT}} and {{CURRENTTIME}}. The reason is of course that even though they may look like Wikispecies templates in reality they're magic words used by the Wikimedia server, which 1) work in a totally different way and 2) don't have local pages on Wikispecies (contrary to our templates).

Of course using <nowiki> like you did also works – so there's no need to change or revert your edit – however for future reference simply adding a colon or the {{tl|...}} template may be quicker and a more elegant solution.

Autopatrolled rights

Dear Pitke, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. Category: letter genera categories

Hello. Have you taken this category type to the pump? Personally I can not see the benefits of this series. In general we have been trying to reduce the numbers of categories, as some editors have been using them for private projects with little or no benefits to our core functions of taxonomy and classification. @Andyboorman: No, I simply went with the pre-existence of 2 letter genera. 4 is definitely the last of these N-letter categories I have any intention of making, as it's limited to quite a reasonably small set. (But I will gladly yield such a category in favour of a list on my user page instead if people don't feel the same way.) 3 letters for sure is outstanding almost as much as 2 letters. Of course these categories aren't any use in the strict sense, but then same can be said for Category:Species named after celebrities. My argument for the existense of these categories is their "oh neat" value to editors like me, whose first 1k edits consist almost entirely of putting taxa-by-author categories to a consistent format and setting sortkeys. It's boring, it's needed, and it can't be easily automated (what with international name conventions being so variant), and running into "oh neat" taxa in these endless little categories (and being able to catalogue the finds in an easy way) is definitely a motivator. In any case, should this sort of category be deemed too unsightly and distracting by the community at large, and not of general interest, they're very trivial to take out of the public's eyes, just set them as hidden. --Pitke (talk) 20:49, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Tautonyms

@Hector Bottai: It's a fun eponym but not a tautonym by far. The genus is named after the person's first name and the species after their family name--since their first and family names aren't the same, this already means there is no tautonymy. Moreover, there is the added element of -pterus, which would make the binomial non-tautonymic even if the first and family names were identical. In cases of tautonyms with parts that aren't exactly the same, you'll notice that the difference is either a slight alteration of spelling (such as Ziziphus zizyphus, to avoid total tautonymy which is illegitimate for plants), or a change in conjugation (such as Lafresnaya lafresnayi. both names being 'direct' eponymous for Lafresnaye but in variant styles appropriate for genus/species names). --Pitke (talk) 19:43, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello friend. My categorization of Agamia agami as a tautonym was reverted because not exactly the same. I believe it falls in the same case of Lafresnaya lafresnayi, what do yo think? --Hector Bottai (talk) 14:01, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
