Administrator access is granted to known and trusted members of the community who are familiar with the policies of Wikispecies. Administrator access is not meant to imply editorial authority on the project.

You can request adminship on Wikispecies if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are not completely new to Wikimedia projects. You have been an editor for at least 2 months and you understand and agree with the goals of the project.
  • You have a user page on Wikispecies and are a contributor here.
  • You agree to follow relevant policies and respect consensus of Wikispecies' users.
  • There is a consensus amongst users here that you would be a suitable administrator.

As with the policy for administrator access on Meta, inactive Administrators may have their access removed by a Steward.

Administrators' abilities[edit]

An admin wielding the mop, a common symbol of administrators. See also: The good admin.

Administrators have the technical ability to perform the following actions:

  • block (and unblock) user accounts and IP addresses from editing
  • protect (and unprotect) pages to restrict editing of a particular page
  • delete and undelete pages
  • delete images and other uploaded files
  • edit the interface and other protected pages

Administrators assume these responsibilities as volunteers who go through a community review process. They are not acting as employees of the Wikimedia Foundation. They are never required to use their tools, and must never use them to gain an advantage in a dispute in which they are involved.

Assigning[edit]

Administrator status can be assigned by any Bureaucrat, and may be removed by a Steward in cases of abuse.

Misuse of administrative tools[edit]

Misusing the administrative tools is considered a serious issue. The administrative tools are provided to trusted users for maintenance and other tasks, and should be used with thought. Serious misuse may result in sanction or even their removal. Misuse, and its consequences, are defined and decided by consensus of the Wikispecies community.

IRC for admins[edit]

Wikispecies has an IRC-channel as an option for live communication; #wikispecies-admins (IRC channel), which is accessible for invited members.

Instructions[edit]

  1. Before you can request access, you must register your nickname and log in.
  2. Type "/nick theusernameyouwantgoeshere" to switch to that username,
register by typing "/msg nickserv register yourpassword youremail".
To keep your email address private, type: "/msg nickserv set hidemail on"
To keep others from using your name while you're offline, type: "/msg nickserv set enforce on"

You access the channel with command /join #wikispecies-admins.

Mailing list[edit]

There is a mailing list located at mail:wikispecies-admin. This is a useful tool for coordination off-wiki; it is recommended that admins sign up for the list.

Past requests[edit]

Requests for adminship[edit]

Please explain here why you need administrator access. After seven days, if there is general agreement that you should be an administrator, one of the bureaucrats will fulfill the request.

You can use {{subst:RFA|Username|Why you want to be a sysop. ~~~~}} when making a request to automatically create the form.

AlvaroMolina (talkcontribsblockall projects)[edit]

I would like to nominate User:AlvaroMolina for adminship. He is an experienced user with a good understanding of how the community works. AlvaroMolina is already a Translation Administrator here on Wikispecies,(verify) as well as bureaucrat on Spanish Wikinews and the Wikipedia Test2 site, and administrator on several other Wikinews- and Wikimedia test sites.(verify)Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 07:14, 3 June 2017 (UTC).

I accept this nomination. Thanks. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 08:00, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Oppose[edit]

# Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose In view of the precedents where well-meaning admins with no taxonomic background failed to understand the special needs or the ongoing controversies in WS, unwittingly harming it with unbalanced decisions and notwithstanding Alvaro Molina's wiki proficiency I can't see how this nomination can be of any meaningful use to WS. Comments[edit]

A point I would like to make here. @Mariusm: Of course you can have your view and vote the way you feel you should and I am not asking you to reconsider. But here is the thing. We need a selection of Admins with different abilities, different knowledge sets. We do need some that are more administrative in their knowledge and understanding of Wikimedia. Are all well intentioned admins without a taxonomic background of use to Wikispecies, no of course not. It is an issue to be kept in check. However, there are many functions on a Wiki that are not taxonomic, we need people to do these things and advise those of us who are taxonomists. None of our admins are experienced in translation, I think it is negligent to not fill that void. Our primary focus is taxonomy, and that needs to be respected. But there are other jobs to do here. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 23:49, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

I would also like to clarify that in case of being chosen, my functions would focus on dealing with cases of obvious speedy deletion (for example: pages that are obviously not taxonomical like Wikipedia biographies or spam), block users who perform repeated vandalism or spam and continue working with translations; all following the corresponding policies. For the tranquility of Mariusm and the other users, I will not participate in discussions where I do not know or know the background issues, Wikispecies has several experienced administrators with the purpose and main objective of this project and always in case of doubt I will let them act. Regards. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 00:45, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
I want to clarify that my vote wasn't a personal repudiation of Alvaro Molina adminship or my doubting of his qualifications which may be considerable, but that it reflects a disquiet of a non taxonomy-oriented admin-majority affecting the WS direction-moving in undesirable ways through votes, proposals, schemes, projects etc. (a case in point was the proposal to translate "References" and "Name" section-titles). Mariusm (talk) 04:42, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
@Mariusm: At no time have I thought that, his arguments are valid and I have no objections with that; my intention as indicated above will not be to participate in discussions or aspects related to the taxonomy, I do not rule out in some future that I can internalize in that aspect, but if I do not have clarity on what should be done in a certain related subject, always I will let the other administrators who dominate the taxonomy or who have more experience take care of that. My focus will be on the maintenance that any administrator of a Wikimedia project does (delete, block, (semi)-protect, etc.) and manage the translations of the pages as I have done the last months. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 13:47, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
@AlvaroMolina: I appreciate your commitment and your understanding and I changed my voting to neutral. Mariusm (talk) 14:51, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
