Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and a belated welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you are enjoying being here. Here are some pages you might not yet have found:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at the Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!

@Tommy Kronkvist: thanks for the warm welcome --DannyS712 (talk) 16:35, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Translation administrator?

Hello again DannyS712, and thanks for your many localization-related edits to our community. I would be happy to promote you to translation admin, if you feel your efforts would benefit from it? I know you've only made just over 100 edits to Wikispecies so far, but they're all good and your excellent cross-wiki track record as sysop, patroller, property creator and translation admin etc. speaks for itself.

If you think that's a good idea a simple "yes" here will suffice (per policy we don't need to vote about translation admins, contrary to bureaucrat- and adminship), but for the sake of formality it's best if instead you make a short, formal request about it at Requests for translation adminship.

Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:36, 24 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist: I wasn't planning to ask, but it could be useful;  Doing… --DannyS712 (talk) 03:37, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist:  Done, see Wikispecies:Translation administrators#DannyS712 (talk • contribs • block • all projects) --DannyS712 (talk) 03:41, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I saw. I'll let it sit for a while so other admins and crats have a chance to catch up. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:45, 24 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist: its been 5 days - can you take a look? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 16:31, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All done. Please see the User rights log for your user account. Congrats and regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:55, 29 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]
thanks - I've taken a crack at the (small) backlog --DannyS712 (talk) 16:56, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request

Hi. I saw your request to delete Wikispecies:Autopatrollers/zh. I'ld be happy to go ahead and delete the page, however first I would like to know more about what's wrong with it? Should indeed the entire page be deleted (per your request) or does it only need some editing? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:16, 23 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist: unfortunately, tagging translation units for deletion isn't the clearest process. I only suggested that Translations:Wikispecies:Autopatrollers/13/zh be deleted, not the whole page. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 22:11, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Thanks for clarifying. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:25, 24 November 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Patrolling rights

Dear DannyS712, You have been granted Patroller user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines.

The user right Patroller gives the user a right to have their page edits automatically marked as patrolled, but also to patrol new pages and mark them as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Patrollers.

This user has Patroller rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as Patroller use the Patroller user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page:
{{User Patroller}}

Please consider carrying out daily patrols of new pages and edits made by users who are not autopatrolled. Here you can see the Patrol statistics for the last 7 days on specieswiki.

Thanks --DannyS712 (talk) 03:33, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Localization

Thanks for the huge undertaking of adding the {{int:}} magic word to many of the "Find all Wikispecies pages which cite this reference" text string in reference templates. There are still quite a lot to go since we currently have a total of 67,898 reference templates, but getting the job started is a good thing... :-)
Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:47, 2 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Its just a start, I was going slow to avoid making it appear that it was an unauthorized bot. Its just a simple mass replacement, but I'll continue (I pre-approve a bunch of edits and then they save over time to avoid flooding recent changes to much) --DannyS712 (talk) 04:04, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist: running now. I've scanned and approved the edits for the remaining templates that start with "A" - ~1200. --DannyS712 (talk) 04:07, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, and as far as I can tell looks good too. Hopefully you check for existing {{int:}} tags since reference templates created after 16:29 (UTC), 27 December 2019‎ already have them included? Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 04:15, 2 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist: its just replacing
[[Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:{{BASEPAGENAME}}|Find all Wikispecies pages which cite this reference]]

with

[[Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:{{BASEPAGENAME}}|{{int:Find all Wikispecies pages which cite this reference}}]]

so checking shouldn't be an issue - it'll only match the full link, not just the piped text. --DannyS712 (talk) 04:21, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I thought so considering you're an experienced MediaWiki user, but had to ask. :-) Anyway, so no problem then. It's a good thing we get this done. Over and out, for now. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 04:31, 2 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]
Glad I can help. --DannyS712 (talk) 04:32, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist: done with A-E --DannyS712 (talk) 20:25, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
👍 Like Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 21:18, 2 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist: now that Rosibot knows about the new internationalized message and is replacing it, I'm going to stop. --DannyS712 (talk) 01:49, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable. Thanks for chipping in with your time and skill to get the work done. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:46, 6 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]
No problem. Next project: links to disambiguation pages --DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist:  Done, feel free to remove the flag. It missed some ISBNs that were in a different format that I'll fix manually. --DannyS712 (talk) 09:29, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Revert Potamotrygon orbignyi

Can you please explain the revert on Potamotrygon orbignyi? Castelanau is clearly the author fishbase.--Earwig (talk) 08:08, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I misclicked, and reverted myself immediately --DannyS712 (talk) 08:09, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Caught in mid edits

Hello. Your work on Glochidion has found me in the middle of a major review and update of Phyllanthaceae. No harm done I guess, but just be a little bit more careful. Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 07:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean - I've never edited Special:PageHistory/Glochidion --DannyS712 (talk) 07:50, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lint...

Thanks for noticing my efforts here as well..

There are some other templates on Wikispecies that need TT replacing.

I didn't use Special:LintErrors to find them though, I used insource:/\<tt/ search on template space.

Most of the remaining instances, I can't edit, perhaps you will be able to edit them (and hopefully the translations) based on the pattern I've tried to use?

Thanks in advance. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:56, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try at some point DannyS712 (talk) 15:57, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Revert needed

https://species.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikispecies:Policy/nl&oldid=8014954

Any chance of reverting this? I don't speak Dutch. and it seems things got confused when I tried to remove a lint error.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:32, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naturally translations should be done by actual speakers ( You've certainly heard of the row at Scowikipedia). ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:32, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The real issue here is that the code for marking a translation as outdated seemingly breaks the layout. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:32, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please file a phabricator task about that. Do you want me to revert your removal of the fuzzy tag? DannyS712 (talk) 20:34, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No. I did find a way around to reverse it properly. However I will revert my changes to translated pages more widely, even if the Lint repairs were in good faith. Watch my contributions, as you might want to re-apply the fixes if you can find native speakers to confirm nothing broke..

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:43, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure DannyS712 (talk) 20:43, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You worked on some of them it seems from the history. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:46, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Reverts complete... Hope I didn't break too much in the process. :sigh ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:15, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translations...

Help:Name section

  • T:34 Translations reviewed so far seem to be identical, Querying need for translation on these sections?
  • T:39 Translations:Help:Name section/39/en Seems to be an 'orphan' translation- No mention of <--!T39--> in Help:Name section
  • T:44 Translations reviewed so far seem to be identical, Querying need for translation on these sections?
  • T:52 Translations reviewed so far seem to be be identical, Querying need for translation on these sections?

Resolving this cleans up some stripped tag Linter concerns..

I hope I am not showing my incompetence. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:38, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

T39 must have been removed from the source at some point. The translations (including the English version) aren't automatically deleted. I'm not sure about the others - maybe open a discussion at the village pump? DannyS712 (talk) 21:41, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly... BTW Some the the original 'source' pages for translation use "tvar", I've not found any documentation about this? I tried https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_administration#markup and related so far.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:59, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Admin status

Hello! I propose that You should be considered for Admin status on WS. Before I take further soundings I really need to ask if you are willing to serve, as not all productive and valuable contributors want the responsibilities. Take time to think about it, no need to hurry. Have look at Wikispecies:Administrators. Thanks and best regards!--Estopedist1 (talk) 07:03, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Let me think about this - I'm in the middle of an RFA on enwikivoyage, and would like to avoid appearing to be a hat collector DannyS712 (talk) 22:27, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, I agree. I am also guessing that Wikipedians who are admins/bureaucrats in several or even many WikiProjects are main targets for hackers--Estopedist1 (talk) 06:13, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have 2fa enabled, and despite repeated notifications about attempted logins am confident that 2fa will prevent me from being hacked DannyS712 (talk) 22:41, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
multi-factor authentication works well. So, just tell when you are willing to help the most scientific Wikiproject - WS. Thanks in advance!--Estopedist1 (talk) 06:28, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About/cy

Please can you elaborate on your claim that Wikispecies:About/cy is "not a translation", and so should be speedy deleted? Do you not see anything recoverable in the page history? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:04, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pigsonthewing: thats one of the issues with the translate extension and tagging for speedy deletion - I only tagged a single translation unit for deletion, since its that individual translation that needs deletion: Translations:Wikispecies:About/7/cy --DannyS712 (talk) 19:00, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now deleted. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:38, 2 May 2021 (UTC).[reply]

Since you were marking the page for translation: Could you please make sure translation-aware transclusion is enabled? It appears that Wikispecies:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage is broken because it isn't. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 12:49, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure how to do that, sorry --DannyS712 (talk) 19:25, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Me neither. May be @Dan Koehl: knows more, he used to be quite AWB-savvy. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:05, 12 June 2021 (UTC).[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist This is completely unrelated to AWB. You have to re-mark the page for translation and tick the box "Enable translation-aware transclusion". I could also do that if you give me translationadmin rights; I already have experience with them from metawiki. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 20:48, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your talk page history...

Not quite in line with w:WP:DENY/w:WP:BRI I'd say. A change like this would have done it, too, especially given you seem to have had the desire to not keep the messages on your talk page for a couple more minutes at any costs. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 12:43, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@1234qwer1234qwer4: its in line with w:WP:BMB and I was working to get blocks the whole time. Also, I can't see the edit filter change you linked, so I'm assuming its a private filter --DannyS712 (talk) 13:12, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I meant the global filter; open the link on Meta (the filter change is very likely not . 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 13:17, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, okay - I wasn't aware of that filter. Thanks for letting me know --DannyS712 (talk) 13:18, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Duh, I accidentally published the message early, sorry; here's the full intended text: Sorry, I meant the global filter; open the link on Meta (the filter change does very likely not exist here). The policy does state that edits by banned users are to be reverted, and I didn't dispute this, I just said that keeping reverting on and on might be less productive from a DENY point of view than reverting just a bit later/less, especially in a non-content namespace. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 13:23, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

re IPs

I cautioned Tommy against the IPs privately, did not intend it to be public. But my reason was that the one he has there now is a result of a CU though he does not have access to the log and only you, Dan and I can see the IPs involved. Just wanted to be careful. I agree though it did not need to be written on the page. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:10, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just being careful was my reason too, really. "Better safe than sorry", so to speak. All is good now though and I have absolutely no problem with the current version without the note (it looks better, too). Btw I know that Scott, Dan and Koavf can see the involved IPs, since they're members of the CU user group, but how come you can see the them too, DannyS712? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk) 06:01, 27 February 2022 (UTC).[reply]
oops sorry my mistake as far as I know Danny cannot, I meant Koavf. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 06:32, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, np. :) I asked because DannyS712 is a member of several global user groups, and I thought may be some of them had changed (in regards to specific functions of the user groups, or him being a member of them). Case closed. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:02, 27 February 2022 (UTC).[reply]
@Faendalimas @Tommy Kronkvist I can't see IPs, but my antivandalism experience tells me that it can be beneficial to publically connect IPs and accounts based on behavior, to make it clear why a block might be blocked when the IP's actions alone might warrant lesser consequences (i.e. a single vandal edit from an IP vs. a single vandal edit that is clearly the behavior of a sock).
