Mass typo replacements[edit]

If you're going to be fixing mass typos, I suggest looking at how many pages need fixing first - for Synonyny -> {{int:Synonyny}} there are literally thousands of pages to fix based on my check, so its a job for a bot to avoid flooding recent changes (like I did before a remembered to check the scopeย :) oops) --DannyS712 (talk) 21:29, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

@DannyS712: Not sure what you mean. Special:Search/"Synonyny" returns two results. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿบ๐ช๐‘ค๐’†๐“‡๐Ÿท๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿœ๐“บ๐”ด๐•–๐–—๐Ÿฐ (๐—๐—ฎ๐˜ญ๐™ ) 21:30, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, typo - I meant fixing "Synonymy" had thousands of hits - if "Synonyny" only has a few then nevermind DannyS712 (talk) 21:32, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Just adding the internationalisation syntax should be done by a bot, I agree, but if there are less than a hundred occurrences of a typo, I think waiting for a bot owner to do it is not worth it. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿบ๐ช๐‘ค๐’†๐“‡๐Ÿท๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿœ๐“บ๐”ด๐•–๐–—๐Ÿฐ (๐—๐—ฎ๐˜ญ๐™ ) 21:35, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

One replacement[edit]

Thanks for replacing my mistake. --Kusurija (talk) 14:50, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

{{aut|Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link|Link}[edit]

... results in the undesired Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link. Template aut is a mere formatting template. I would keep {{aut|Link} and change {{a|Link} only. -RLJ (talk) 15:02, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Conspectus familiarum[edit]

English would be "Overview of families"; Latin would be "Conspectus familiarum". Mixing languages within a single heading makes translation awkward if not impossible. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:18, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

@1234qwer1234qwer4 and EncycloPetey: Sorry for my very late response, but I've been suffering from covid-19. I'm now fully recovered, but instead temporarily bedridden due to a nasty spinal disc herniationโ€ฆ
I think that in accordance with Wikispecies guidelines and praxis, the proper phrasing should be "Overview of familiae" (though not "Overview of familiรฆ", even if some of us likes ligatures.) See for example Help, General Wikispecies: Language convention and the following paragraphs for information.
Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:07, 9 March 2021 (UTC).
I'm not sure if that guideline does apply to this case. Anyway, thanks for your reply, and get well soon! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿบ๐ช๐‘ค๐’†๐“‡๐Ÿท๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿœ๐“บ๐”ด๐•–๐–—๐Ÿฐ (๐—๐—ฎ๐˜ญ๐™ ) 13:13, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
@Tommy Kronkvist: Why do you think the label should be part English and part Latin? Do you think all the translations into other languages should use familiae as well? If so, we need to alter all of the translations currently in place, since only the English label uses familiae right now. --EncycloPetey (talk) 16:09, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

  1. Label part English and part Latin? The (English) guideline isn't yet crisp clear regarding this. That's unfortunate, but until clearly defined in the guideline I guess this particular issue is partly a question of each user's own preference. My personal standpoint is that only strictly nomenclatural and taxonomical terms should use Latin, whereas other terms such as "Overview", "References", "Vernacular names" etc should be language specific. As far as I can tell this is also the current WS praxis, but that can of course change.
  2. Do you think all the translations into other languages should use familiae as well? Yes, at least all languages with a writing system that uses an alphabet rather than logographs or a syllabic system. This is also in line with almost all of the currently localized versions of the English guideline, for example the German and Italian versions. Also, large parts of many of the non-English guidelines are yet to be localized (e.g. the Danish and Russian ones), hence as of now are mere copies of the English text.

Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:13, 23 March 2021 (UTC).

@Tommy Kronkvist I'm sorry, but MediaWiki:Overview of familiae/de uses "Familien", meaning "families". Using "familiae" in the mid of a German phrase like that would be completely unthinkable. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿบ๐ช๐‘ค๐’†๐“‡๐Ÿท๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿœ๐“บ๐”ด๐•–๐–—๐Ÿฐ (๐—๐—ฎ๐˜ญ๐™ ) 17:20, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes, you're of course right โ€“ sorry, I'm getting a bit tired, suffering from a nasty spinal disc herniation (ะผะตะถะฟะพะทะฒะพะฝะพั‡ะฝะฐั ะณั€ั‹ะถะฐ) and the required pain killers. I was thinking more of the standard terms in the Taxonavigation list, i.e. the "single word" items "Familia", "Genus" and so forth, without the "Overview ofโ€ฆ" part. I still fully stand behind my "answer number 1" above though, at least for English localizations. โ€“Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:51, 23 March 2021 (UTC).
So we're treating English differently from all other languages because . . .ย ? In any case "of familiae" is ungrammatical, since it uses the nominative plural instead of the genitive plural. The English phrase "of families" translates to the Latin word "familiarum", not "of familiae". But I content that putting headers into hybrid mixings of languages is a bad idea, and the claim that "familiae" is English (as we do now) is incorrect. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:36, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
