Singular or Plural?

Should the singular form be used (as is practice) or the plural (as is the latin form, and corresponding to the real meaning)? Gbnogkfs 6 January 2007, 14:08 UTC

Let's take "Animalia": it means "animals" (plural) but the english vernacular is given as "animal" (singular). Besides, in Latin genus and lower is usually singular (e.g. "Homo sapiens sapiens", singular), while family and higher is plural (e.g. Animalia, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Primates, Hominidae). Template linkage

The template should link to a language specific Wikipedia entry (regardless of whether said article exists or not on Wikipedia) 70.51.9.51 06:14, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

That seems like a good idea but currently we use interwikis instead. One issue is that the Wikipedia entries sometimes are under their common names and sometimes under their scientific name (whether or not a common name even exists). Ilokano language

I do not speak Ilokano (a language of the Philippines) but I was trying to make a VN entry on Amanita phalloides corresponding to the interwiki: ilo:Kallugong ti natay (Uong) and found that "ilo" does not appear when I use it in {{VN}} --Georgeryp 20:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

To help new users, an admin should add (inside <noinclude>'s of course) a link to "Help:Vernacular names section" so it's clear what the standard way to use this is. Please add the codes for Hausa (ha), Fula (ff) and Zarma (dje). I'd also like to bring up a possible listing of son for Songhai languages since some key species names would be common across these (including dje). Thanks. Actually for ha, the Boko (Latin) transcription is more widely used than the Ajami (Arabic) one, so plz use Hausanci for "Hausa language." Fulfulde is okay as endonym for ff although that code also covers Pulaar. Zarmaciine would be appropriate for "Zarma language" dje.--A12n 14:39, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Metadata?

Could the two letter language codes be added in the template to each language entry? It's useful for parsers to be able to grep this out without having to resort to knowing the localized name of each language. It uses {{#language:}} for each code, so you don't need to know the native name. In fact, you will not find the actual names at all in the code. Besides a few exceptions, the localized names are pulled directly from the php.[1] Rocket000 05:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

That is EXACTLY what "see above" refers to. About 15 requests up, I noted that there is an issue with #language (which is used in Template:VN and others related to it) that means these all don't display the name properly, and that there is nothing we can do locally to change that because it's a general MediaWiki situation. Cutting names

The template columns cuts off the words in the names. It looks a bit strange. I am not good at source code, so I'm grateful if someone could look at this.

Can't this template be reworked to include all of a long vernacular name in one box? Either let the width of the column or both columns be determined by the length of the longest name in the column (not hard in Lua AFAICT) or just set the column width to be very wide. Another desirable improvement would be to allow multiple vernacular names from a single language to appear in the same box. Is technical help from another project needed? Capitalization

I think it's okay now, per the Help:Contents guideline. However please note that (contrary to the other languages) English vernacular names should use "Title Caps" rather than "Sentence caps", and that all German proper nouns should always be capitalised (whether part of a vernacular name or not). –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:24, 12 September 2019 (UTC).

Collapsible lists for better legibility

I suggest we make the "Vernacular names" sections collapsible/expandable so that they wont take up as much space on taxon pages with a large number of vernacular names. See for example Columba livia and Passer domesticus where the "Vernacular names" sections takes up 70% of the pages, or more. Making this change only requires minute additions to the code, e.g. see the {{Nadi}} template.

Also, could you please add these language codes from Indonesian local languages? The languages have Wikipedia communities under WMID's support.

• Gorontalo (local name: Hulontalo; language code: gor)

@Wirjadisastra: There is no bug. You can add names in all of the above languages. If you add the name "Foorbar" in Banjar, the template will display "Banjar: Foobar"; but if you add it in Madurese, it will currently display "mad: Foorbar", and for Nias, "nia: Foorbar". We need to fix these, so that the names of the languages are displayed, instead of their three-letter codes. Unfortunately not. As vernacular names are not an important part of taxonomy, the vernacular names list in Wikispecies is only a summary; it's not intended to be a comprehensive listing of every local variant, past or present. This has been discussed and decided upon many times during the past several years. Please see the usage section (and the "Simple English" section below it) in our Vernacular Names Guideline for a bit more information.

Could Cree and Ojibwe (ISO cr and oj) be added? The vernacular "Moose" (Alces americanus) in particular comes from Algonquian cognates, and it might be helpful for some other North American animals.--Molandfreak (talk) 02:04, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

It's already supported in MediaWiki software. It's only one of the varieties, but to the best of my understanding, it's the most common and written one.
