Welcome to Wikispecies, Haps!

We like having new people contributing to Wikispecies. Here are a few things that may be interesting:

  • If you haven't done so, we strongly recommend you to create an account. Creating account is quick and free, plus it provides you more features such as preferences and the ability to keep a watchlist to track changes made to articles that interest you.
  • Have a look at Done and to do.
  • Help:Contents provides a good introduction to editing Wikispecies.
  • Templates are there to help you following syntax and formatting rules.

Please ask further questions in the Village Pump.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at the Wikimedia Commons.

We hope you'll enjoy the time you spend on Wikispecies!

You can sign your messages with ~~~~.

Creediidae

[edit]

The reason the taxonavigation is not working is because the template for it had not been created. I have gone ahead and created it. Look here for more information on creating templates. Have fun!--Open2universe | Talk 00:25, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for both, work and link :-), Greetings, --Haps (talk) 07:51, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template:Poecilopsettidae

[edit]

You had a typo in this template, so it appeared with a redlink. I have fixed it.--Open2universe | Talk 01:03, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you could have done that yourself. Simply go to Template:Poecilopsettidae and click on the edit button. Templates are pages, just like any other. Good luck. --Open2universe | Talk 11:58, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

[edit]

Thanks for reminding me that I haven't finished with it yet! Actually I was waiting until ZooBank is back up again, so as to register it at the same time ... Stho002 (talk) 21:29, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm reluctant to start something (etymology) which really isn't that useful in and of itself, and which would take another 10 thousand years to complete for all taxon pages on WS! I do now add a bit relating to etymology to my pages (under the heading of 'Gender'), as this bit is relevant to the correct spelling of a species epithet when it changes genus. My advice to you is to think less about adding more and more detail, but think more about getting basic data up for more species (i.e., completeness rather than detail) ... Stho002 (talk) 21:54, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
PS: Also, it is very hard to make etymology consistent, because many species are named without any specification of etymology ... Stho002 (talk) 21:55, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
If you want a good difference, then add more references with doi links or links to BHL, PDFs, etc. Stho002 (talk) 22:01, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
PS: WS functions best as a classified library. We need to concentrate more on data structure. For example, more complete pages like this one, with reference templates that can then be easily copied and pasted to the relevant taxon pages, and which automatically track the pages that they are used on ... Stho002 (talk) 22:07, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
PS2: Think of it this way: if you don't add links to references, then it is less useful. But if you do, then the links can change, and the old ones become dead. So, if you hard write each reference into every taxon page, and the link changes, then you have to change every page with that link on it. But if you use reference templates, then you only need to change the link once on the template page .... Stho002 (talk) 22:18, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Subspecies

[edit]

Please look at the changes I've made to the taxonavigation sections of the pages you created for fish subspecies, as this is how subspecies of all other animals are treated on Wikispecies. Koumz (talk) 14:22, 7 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kullander

[edit]

Please remember that Sven Kullander's wife, Fang Fang Kullander, is also a taxon authority for fishes, so all author links for Kullander need to be pipe-linked to the correct Kullander. Koumz (talk) 14:30, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for note--Haps (talk) 02:38, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reference templates – a handy hint

[edit]

If you like to, you can add {{subst:reftemp}} immediately after the reference citation when creating a new reference template page, which will automatically add the "find all Wikispecies pages which cite this reference" link to the end of the text. It will also automatically add it to the "Reference templates" category. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 22:58, 14 June 2014 (UTC).Reply

Interesting! Thanks for the note--Haps (talk) 19:57, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrolled rights

[edit]

Dear Haps, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Autopatrollers.

This user has autopatrolled rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as autopatroller use the autopatroller user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page:

{{User Autopatroller}}

If you have a Meta-Wiki user page, you can put the Wikispecies autopatrolled user box for Meta on your Meta-Wiki user page.

Theres always a need of patrolling files edited by unregistered users, and if you think you have a good understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines and want to help out with patrolling, you can request patrol rights at Patroller.

Macrodonta

[edit]

Please note Macrodonta. I made into disambig page, as there are four possible pages, two of which are Actinopterygii. Will help with synonymies. Neferkheperre (talk) 13:21, 25 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Can't find it. Please explain.--Haps (talk) 05:45, 9 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
I can't find any reference of any valid taxa named Macrodonta, except on species level. They are:
Plantae:
  • Chirita macrodonta D. Fang & D.H. Qin
  • Olearia macrodonta Baker (provisionally accepted name)
  • Pedicularis macrodonta Richardson
Animalia:
  • Anthophorula macrodonta González-Vaquero & Roig-Alsina, 2005
  • Dinocrocuta or Crocuta macrodonta Schmidt-Kittler, 1975
  • Escharella macrodonta Levinsen, 1916
  • Spirontocaris macrodonta J.F.L. Hart, 1930
As for somewhat higher taxa there is a genus of beetles with a similar name, but with a slightly different spelling: Macrodontia Lepeletier, Serville & Lacordaire, 1830
– Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 19:15, 24 July 2015 (UTC).Reply
OUCH!! That should have been Macrodon. Sorry! I have spent 2+ hours on this today, and finally dug back into my contributions to 25 May. My computer has developed this little quirk where I push "save page", it then so claims my edit was saved, when it was not. I found it about 10 June, so now I must double check. It is occasional and sporadic, but still can create problems. Only happens with Wikispecies.
While working through this, I discovered Macrodonta does exist, with one valid name and one homonym in Bivalvia, and indications of something in Plantae. Neferkheperre (talk) 15:47, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Newberry, 1889

[edit]

Hi Haps. on today's reference page Newberry, 1889, that should read "Erie Shale", not "Eerie Shale". Also, that publication is digitized on BHL. Very many older American/British are, less for foreign language pubs.

For any publication, WorldCat is your friend. It will give you ISSN numbers, and relevant data, including online links. So, for Newberry, we have Transactions of the New York Academy of Sciences. I went ahead and entered it into Category:ISSN, with publication info. Neferkheperre (talk) 21:35, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, Neferkheperre. Must be my source already made the mistake, because I only have done it by copy and paste. Thanks for the tip about WorldCat also. --Haps (talk) 13:53, 22 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Repositories

[edit]

Hey. I wanted to let you know that the Repositories page is now dispreferred as a way to organize acronyms of institution, and is in the (attempted) process of transferring to a category based system (under category:repositories). I'm letting you know mostly because I've been in the process of normalizing the system (as it includes many duplicates and some poorly chosen acronyms) and you seem to be one of the few people still editing/updating. If you're curious, my list is currently at Wikispecies:Institution acronyms needing fixes. Circeus (talk) 05:53, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know. Does this mean, in the future we should link in a different way?--Haps (talk) 05:59, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
The idea I'm working with is that having institution identified is more important than reproducing the acronym in the paper cited. You can usually check for an institution with a simple google search with site:species.wikimedia.org repositories plus a word or two (usually I use city of location). If no category exists, feel free to create it and the institution page. Since I'm monitoring new ones worse come to worse I'll merge it later when i get to it.
The template {{Repository link}} ({{Rl}}) exists to create a link to the institution page and insert the category automatically.
Feel free to ask me any questions (I seem to be the only one really interested in shepherding this normalization through.). Circeus (talk) 06:20, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

{{subst:reftemp}}

[edit]

Hi Haps,
you might have noticed, that I added the Template:Reftemp in the form {{subst:reftemp}} to several of your reference templates. I'd be glad, if you could do this yourself in future. It's easy to use; just put it at the end of your text. Thank you! --Murma174 (talk) 16:27, 25 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

All rigt, will do it.--Haps (talk) 10:01, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! It looks nicer, if you put {{subst:reftemp}} directly at the end of the text, no space, no line feed. Thanks again --Murma174 (talk) 11:22, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Meanwhile I have doubts, if this template should do what it does, because it makes in parts only the same thing as the tool "What links here" on the left side of every page.--Haps (talk) 19:06, 16 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes that is correct, but in any case the {{Reftemp}} template is a very convenient (and quicker) way of semi-automatically adding a reference to the Reference templates category. Also, in the future more subroutines might very well be added to the template, such as automatically sorting and listing references in regards to their specific author(s), specific scientific disciplines and journals, years of publication, and such. And the editors would still only have to enter "{{subst:reftemp}}" in order for those functions to spring into action, since all fiddling with the Wiki database is done by the template and underlaying Wiki software. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:22, 24 February 2016 (UTC).Reply

Galkiniidae

[edit]

I see you just added tab for family Galkiniidae. Type genus is Galkinia, which I had occasion last year to work on. Original publication is very obscure, and my contact at Russian Academy of Sciences took almost two weeks to find it. See Perreault, 2014 for up-to-date citation of Ghekker. Also try searching Galkinia on BHL. There are articles with extensive information on Pholidophoriformes. Neferkheperre (talk) 07:40, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Neferkheperre, I've found it on the new (to me) reference Van der Laan, 2015, which I think is a very informative ref for family level taxonomy in fossil fish.--Haps (talk) 12:07, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reference Format

[edit]

Will you please take a look at this? We had a vote to decide on a standard format for references. WS will gain much by standardizing the ref section. Thanks, Mariusm (talk) 08:28, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

All right, will do it this way, not a big difference. But what about the {{subst:reftemp}}, which I was asked to use?--Haps (talk) 10:30, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
No problem, {{subst:reftemp}} goes along very well also with the voted format. Thanks, Mariusm (talk) 10:38, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Lachnolaimus maximus

[edit]

Haps,

Can you look to the references in Lachnolaimus maximus. One is not good. PeterR (talk) 08:32, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you PeterR, I was interrupted working on it. So I saved everything before I had to do it all over. Will continue now.--Haps (talk) 12:40, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Fernandez-Silva & Randall

[edit]

Small reference confliction. I just made Fernandez-Silva et al., 2016 before realizing you had made Fernandez-Silva & Randall, 2016 for same reference. If we want to get obsessive-compulsive, reference should be titled "Fernandez-Silva et al., 2016", with taxon authorship as "Fernandez-Silva & Randall In Fernandez-Silva et al., 2016". This keeps authorships straight. Many research papers nowadays are almost committees of specialists for taxonomy, geography, genetics, ecology, etc. This is especially so for symbionts. I really haven't done anything with this one yet. Neferkheperre (talk) 15:54, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

You're right, let's change it. Will you?--Haps (talk) 15:59, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
On it! Neferkheperre (talk) 17:03, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Zootaxa

[edit]

You have subscription to Zootaxa? Neferkheperre (talk) 21:11, 29 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

No, but I can read many of its articles in an institute.--Haps (talk) 09:36, 30 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
For me, nearest institute is at U of Mississippi, 480 miles away. Eight years of Republicans running Louisiana has gutted all our higher education, and LSU Library has not been able to update subscriptions since 2008 to any journals. Neferkheperre (talk) 12:29, 30 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

New classification for Bythitidae

[edit]

Hi there. I see you're interested in Teleostei. Are you aware of the new classification for Bythitidae with a new familia Dinematichthyidae? See here please. Do you want me to help with this? Mariusm (talk) 05:50, 8 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes please, every help appreciated. Too many fish for one person to edit here. Enough to do for many of us.--Haps (talk) 08:52, 8 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

At the water pump is presently discussed two topics;

1.) is to follow a previous consensus and change all [[BASEPAGENAME]] into [[susbt:BASEPAGENAME]], something which already has started.

2.) is what to do with the Category: <<taxon name>> (<<any country>>) files created by Stephen Thorpe. Some 5 000 have so far been moved together at Candidates for speedy deletion, but concearn has been objected, that some of those files may be useful, in all, or that parts should be transfered somewhere, before a major mass delete. Please join the discussion at pump and take part in shaping a consensus.
