Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:
- Help:Contents provides a good introduction to editing Wikispecies.
- Templates are there to help you to follow our syntax and formatting standards.
- Have a look at Done and to do.
If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.
If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.
Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!
Block
[edit]Regarding your block; please see Wikispecies:Administrators' Noticeboard#TheGoodIndian. Feel free to reply here. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:54, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- I request that my account (current IP address 103.88.217.101, block ID #8329) be unblocked. TheGoodIndian (talk) 14:27, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- A simple statement saying "I want to be unblocked" will not suffice. Please also add an explanation to why you made the questionable edits which led to your account User:TheGoodIndian being blocked in the first place. For instance the edit mentioned by Andy Mabbett at the Administrators' Noticeboard (linked above):
For example I noticed yesterday that they had added several vernacular names which appeared to be incorrect. In particular the last one they added translates (according to Google) as "India is at risk".

@Pigsonthewing and Tommy Kronkvist: As TheGoodIndian states at Andy's enwiki talk page that he doesn't know how to make an unblock request, I'm taking the liberty of copying his last post on that page to here, as I think it sheds light on the issue:
@RexxS: I will stand by my assertion. As a native Bengali-speaker, I can tell you that the word ঝুঁটি (jhoo-ti) translates to a tuft of hair on the head, or a crest, the kind that you can see over the head of a rooster or in samurai hairstyles. The second part is ভরত (bhorot), which may have been mistaken for ভারত (bharot), the name for 'India' in many Indian languages including Bengali. Nevertheless, I checked Google Translate myself and found that it is, indeed, translating ঝুঁটি as "risk". I assume that it is mistaking ঝুঁটি for the word ঝুঁকি (jhoo-ki), which is the actual Bengali for risk. I know that no Wiki project is a platform for political comments, and I have never and will never write anything so ridiculous as "India is at risk" on such a site. As for the source, since that report has been produced by renowned institutions, including the WWF and the Wildlife Institute of India, it is extremely unlikely that it will have a typo. I rest my case and request both you and Mr Mabbett to kindly remove the block on my Wikispecies account. Regards, User:TheGoodIndian 13:40, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
There's nothing more I can do, and I can't find the instructions for making an unblock-request; but perhaps Andy or some other admin here can review the situation in the light of a probable Google mistranslation. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 16:38, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- @RexxS: This project doesn't have the formality of Wikipedia, simple text suffices. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:22, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
Unblocked; with apologies to TheGoodIndian for the inconvenience and upset, but I'm sure they recognise the importance of protecting a small and under-staffed project from what appeared to be vandalism. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:20, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: Thank you for proactively looking into the issue and clearing the misunderstanding. The importance of protecting Wikis from vandalism can hardly be overemphasised. The one who actually needs to apologise is not you but Google Translate.
- @RexxS: Thank you for helping me out back there. Benefited me immensely. TheGoodIndian (talk) 13:04, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
Bengali translation
[edit]স্বাগতম: I'm happy to have you here. As you probably know, Bengali is the language with the most speakers that has almost all of them confined to a fairly small region (i.e. Hindi has more speakers but is spoken across a very large territory, Portuguese has fewer speakers but they are spread across several continents). I'd be interested to see if you're willing to provide translations of Bengali terms here on Wikispecies and our other sister projects. It looks like you've only edited en.wp, bn.wp, and c as well, so there is a lot of knowledge you have just by being bilingual that could benefit our community. Thanks again for joining. ধন্যবাদ. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:42, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
