Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! Invitation to join the Ten Year Society[edit]

Dear Korg,

I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Ten Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikispecies project for ten years or more. I believe you made your first edit on WS in 2005-08-29.

Best regards,

Dan Koehl (talk) 04:05, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dan, thank you! I made my first edit on Wikispecies a long time ago but I really started contributing in July of this year, so I feel relatively new here :) I may update my user page some day. Korg (talk) 21:17, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Great job[edit]

Hey, thanks for doing a great job in correcting my confusing between Albert-Auguste Fauvel and Charles Adolphe Albert Fauvel. Mariusm (talk) 13:32, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Marius, you're welcome! I think that all issues have been sorted out, at least on Wikispecies. Best regards, Korg (talk) 14:15, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Default sort[edit]

Thanks for correcting my category confusion. However, {{DEFAULTSORT:}} belongs on author page instead of taxa page. Neferkheperre (talk) 18:38, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Neferkheperre: You're welcome! I used to create taxa categories without DEFAULTSORT, but I've seen several users such as Franz Xaver [1] and Orchi [2] that are adding it, and I thought it wasn't a bad idea since there is a table of contents in Category:Taxa by author. The vast majority of these taxa categories aren't sorted, so adding it (or not) does not seem to make a difference. Now I wonder if and how Category:Taxa by author is really used. Korg (talk) 19:34, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Without {{DEFAULTSORT:}} these Author taxa categories get sorted in Category:Taxa by author according to first name. In my opinion, it is preferable to get them sorted according to family name. Should it really be better, that e.g. Category:Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius taxa is sorted somewhere among the Carls, or Category:William Jackson Hooker taxa among the Williams? --Franz Xaver (talk) 20:11, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Somehow or other it escaped my brain that it might be necessary to use {{DEFAULTSORT:}} for Author taxa categories. Wish I had figured that out about 2000 Author pages ago. I shall add them from now on. Neferkheperre (talk) 12:40, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Korg,

The author of the subspecies Anthene merioli aridicola is indeed Alan J. Gardiner. The author is already change in the wright author name. Thanks for your attention. PeterR (talk) 11:37, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sharon Jansa[edit]

Hi! Would you agree to move Sharon Jansa to Sharon A. Jansa? Other authors, Robert S. Voss, Darrin P. Lunde, Alfred L. Gardner, have full name style in title, it would be interesting to maintain a standard. Thanks, Burmeister (talk) 18:31, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Burmeister: Hi! No problem, I've moved the article to Sharon A. Jansa. I initially chose to name the page "Sharon Jansa" to follow the name written on her various profiles, but I agree it is interesting to have consistency here. Feel free to move other pages as you please! Best regards, Korg (talk) 19:43, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. Burmeister (talk) 19:47, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nícolas Eugênio de Vasconcelos Saraiva[edit]

Hi! The correct spelling is "Nícolas Eugênio de Vasconcelos Saraiva". You can check here. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 18:46, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Burmeister: Hi! I corrected the spelling, thank you! Korg (talk) 19:01, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

John W. Brown[edit]

I have made a redirect from John W. Brown to John Wesley Brown, because our agreements is to use the full names. After that I have made a redirect From Category:John W. Brown taxa to Category:John Wesley Brown taxa. I espect to see all the Category:John W. Brown by Category:John Wesley Brown taxa. It is too much work to change the items by hand. Maybe you can do this automaticly. Some people make a redirect from the full name to the abrevation name. Thats against the agreements.PeterR (talk) 08:55, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@PeterR: I agree about full names, and thanks for your edits. However, please use the move function if you want to change the title of a page: in the upper right corner, click on "More", then "Move", then you can change the title. If you click on the "Move page" button, the title will be changed and a redirect from the old title will be automatically created. Please see en:Help:How to move a page for more information. Ryan Alexander St Laurent[edit]

Why have you Ryan Alexander St Laurent redirect to Ryan Alexander St. Laurent?. Ryan Alexander St Laurent is the real name. Please redirect Ryan Alexander St. Laurent to Ryan Alexander St Laurent. PeterR (talk) 16:13, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PeterR: Hi Peter! I did not redirect Ryan Alexander St Laurent to Ryan Alexander St. Laurent. Please look closely to the page histories: Ryan A. St. Laurent, Ryan Alexander St Laurent, Ryan Alexander St. Laurent. But I can do the changes you suggest! Korg (talk) 16:54, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As a side note, for modifications like this, the pages needs to be moved and not redirected, to preserve the page histories. Korg (talk) 17:00, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Korg thanks. I saw your name in history. I always move the authors old name to the new name. In this case I was afraid that the good name was move again to the wrong name. Ryan send me an e-mail for correction. PeterR (talk) 07:34, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PeterR: No problem, I made the corrections, all is resolved now. Also, I noticed that you asked Tommy to make edits to pages you moved (e.g. [3]). What do you think about a page like Wikispecies:Edit requests (or a better title) to make such requests? So you could make all your requests in this page, and any editor could resolve them if they want. Korg (talk) 11:53, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. An edit request page (or again, maybe with a better title) sounds like a good idea. We should perhaps bring it up as a suggestion to the community first. I'm exceptionally pressed for time right now but can take care of it when my schedule is less cramped. Best wishes, –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 12:39, 12 May 2020 (UTC).[reply]
