Welcome to Wikispecies!

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:54, 13 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

References

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your very welcome contributions! Most of the Diptera taxon pages you have recently created doesn't cite any references. Could you please also add verifiable citations for the data, if available? Our preferred format for that is described here but please bear in mind that the actual references are much more important than how they are presented. The layout of things can always be formalised at a later date (for example by me). Cheers, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:46, 3 July 2019 (UTC).Reply

@Tommy Kronkvist: Hi Tommy, thank you greatly for the advice, I'm still very new to this so great to learn what the standards are - are references as per - https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Dolichopeza_(Dolichopeza)_rowanorum ok? Thanks again. Best regards, Zedbill (talk) 01:24, 4 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's excellent. I've made a few minor additions since, as you can see here. I also went ahead and created a corresponding Wikidata page: Q65023787. You don't really need to bother with the Wikidata stuff unless you want to, but it may be good to know that Wikidata works as a sort of "hub" connecting all of the different Wikimedia sister projects. All information there is shared and can be automatically fetched by the many different Wikimedia sister projects, for example Commons (where the pictures you recently uploaded are stored), Wikibooks, Wikisource, and the no less than 303 different language versions of Wikipedia! And of course also Wikispecies.
At the moment there is only one Wikimedia page about Dolichopeza rowanorum, namely the one created by you. However in due time I'm sure that the equivalent pages will also be created on the different Wikipedias, and then they will all show up as links on the Wikidata page. See for example Q1931024 (regarding Limoniidae) which contains a bunch of links to different Wikipedias as well as to the corresponding page here at Wikispecies. If you scroll down you will also see quite a few identifiers to external databases with data that can be automatically fetched by templates, and then automatically inserted on for example the Wikispecies' Limoniidae page. It's really quite handy and increases the chance of information being consistent throughout all Wikimedia projects. And umm... it's also quite complicated – but that's another story. :-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:14, 4 July 2019 (UTC),Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist: Thanks Tommy, I've added references to all of the new taxon pages. Thanks also for the details on wikidata, when I've got a better handle on the wiki basics I'll definitely look more into the wikidata side of things. Best regards, Zedbill (talk) 04:10, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Good work! Feel free to contact me personally on my talk page or the whole Wikispecies' community at the Village Pump, should you have any future questions, ideas or suggestions. Form of names (subgenus)

[edit]

Hey. I've noticed you created a lot of species name of the form "Genus (Subgenus) species". The generally agreed standard on Wikispecies is to not list the subgenus, for both nomenclatural (i.e. ICZN 6.1 regulates the form that such name use must take, but explicitly points out the subgenus is not a part of the name itself) and practical reasons (i.e. less inconsistency between zoological and botanical names, no need to rename species pages if they move within their own genus without even getting an actual new combination etc.). Circeus (talk) 18:26, 17 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Circeus: Hi, thank you for letting me know - I didn't realize. I'll be sure to omit the subgenus for all future species I add. Thanks for the guidance - much appreciated.Zedbill (talk) — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 165.225.226.110 (talk) 20:24, 17 December 2019
