Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! Dan Koehl (talk) 12:02, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Author names[edit]

Hello Gderrin, and thank you for your contributions! Here's a few notes about the names, links, and templates regarding authors.

First of all, using the search function is often a good way to find out whether a certain author has a page in Wikispecies or not. You will find the Wikispecies' search box near the upper right corner in your web browser (below the links to your talk page, watchlist, preferences, etc). To use your recently created page Zieria adenodonta as an example, searching for "Armstrong" will show you a list of authors with that surname. As you can see there is no Wikispecies page for James Andrew Armstrong as of yet. It's still a good idea to use that format for the author name (rather than, say, "James Armstrong") since it's the format most likely to be used when the page eventually gets created (perhaps by you!)

When adding author names to pages, please use the author templates. For a name you want to be linked, use the {{A}} template. For unlinked author names, please use the {{Aut}} template instead. We don't have any strict policy on when to link an author name, and many Wikispecies users have their personal style and habit in regards to this. Personally I tend to at least link an author name the very first time it is occurs in every section of a page, without over-linking. If it occurs several times in the same section of a page (say, in the "Synonyms" list) then I prefer to only link it the first time in that section, since many users find that a multitude of identical links clutters up the page and lessens legibility. Having said that, of course there is an exception. :-) Author names in the "References" section should always be linked. There are two reasons for this. Primarily, all relevant data should be readily available within each citation. Furthermore, since the same citations are often copied between several pages (for instance a publication by J.A.Armstr. might be used on several Zieria pages), and the author name might not already be linked (or even present) on the page a citation is copied into.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to bring them forth on my user talk page. Happy editing, and best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:42, 6 August 2017 (UTC).[reply]

@Dan Koehl: Many thanks for that. I'm still learning and your help is appreciated. Gderrin (talk) 12:22, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. Only... though I've met Dan Koehl and consider him a friend, we're not the same person. I'm Tommy Kronkvist (talk)... :-) 13:15, 6 August 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Tropicos template[edit]

Hi again. We have several Tropicos templates, but some of them are more or less deprecated, partly due to changes at Tropicos end. Often the {{TROPICOS}} and {{Tropicosp}} templates works better than the {{MBG}} equivalent. For other templates, please see Category:External botany link templates. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:45, 8 August 2017 (UTC).[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist: Thanks for that Tommy and for the other help. I'll be a bit quiet over the next 6 weeks, mostly taking orchid pics. Back on Wikispecies after that. I want to fix the Melaleuca, Eremophila and Zieria pages (after getting the required skills!). Gderrin (talk) 10:54, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your contributions so far. Welcome back at any time, and good luck hunting down those orchids! Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:59, 8 August 2017 (UTC).[reply]
