There are differences in the circumscription of this family, Olmstead et al.(2016) and Tropicos (2014) compared to Fischer et al. (2013). This page largely follows Olmstead et al. (2016) in order to maintain consistency in the Lamiales, but has incorporated minor genera not covered in their analysis. However, this circumscription could change when further evidence is available. Cubitanthus is placed here following Perret et al. (2013), Olmsted (2015) & Stevens (2020), but this is uncertain. In addition, there are now still major differences in the circumscription of Lindernia, that is to accept a wide or narrow circumscription. Biffin et al. (2018) proposed subsuming all combinations under Bonnaya and Vandellia into Lindernia s.l., but this is not accepted by Govaerts et al. (2022) & Hassler (2022), as they point out out problems in insufficient sampling, extrapolation of Australian data to a global perspective and continuing uncertainty in phylogenetic analysis.
