Type species: Acucephalus tricinctus Curtis, 1836: 620, by original designation in Hamilton, 1975 as (p.1012) "Type-species: Cicada tricincta Curtis 1836".

Gender: feminine [Contra any application of 30.1.4.4, as Hamilton, 1975 treated in combination with adjectival feminine, notably (p.1013) as "P. tricincta (Curtis) is tentatively synonymized with bifasciata" and (p.1018) "Planaphrodes bifasciata (L.) New Nearctic Record"].
