- Holotype: EBRG 17513, adult ♂, skin and skull, collected by J. Ochoa, M. Bevilacqua and A. Ferrer A. on 25 March 1990.
- Type locality: “Reserva Forestal de Imataca, Unidad V, between Tumeremo and Bochinche, Bolívar State, Venezuela, coordinates 08°00'N, 61°30'W, 180 m elevation”.
- Synonymised with Philander canus by Voss, Díaz-Nieto & Jansa (2018: 21).
