Help:Name section

@AlvaroMolina, Chrumps, CreativeC38, Koavf, Samuele2002, and יונה בנדלאק:

Can any one (or several :-) of you translation admins please take a look at the code in Help:Name section. The code seems flawed; for instance the spacing between paragraphs is messy (using two line breaks instead of one in many places) and worse, <!--T:xx--> translation codes are rendered onscreen. Thanks beforehand! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:50, 28 February 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Look like someone fix it (i don't see it any more). I don't like the use of space in the begining of line. better to use <pre> tags for this, not sure if it works with translations tags. - yona b (talk) 12:41, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Tommy Kronkvist Thanks for the tip ;) I see what I can do. --Samuele2002 (talk) 12:59, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

───────────────────────── @Samuele2002 and יונה בנדלאק: Thank you both. As for leading spaces in the beginning of lines, I don't like them either. However in this particular case most of the available alternatives are even worse, since we need the wiki code within the examples to work, and several of the examples are presented on two or more consecutive lines. Using an actual example from the Help:Name section page we can compare the different possible solutions. Leading spaces (as used on the page right now) will render a result like this:

Zoology: Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus, 1758
Botany: Clematis viticella L. (1753)

It's clean and the result looks good enough, but it is very easy to miss adding the extra space (or add too many) and then the result may look very weird. Using <pre> tags instead is normally a good choice, however that will show the wiki code rather than interpret and execute it:

Zoology: ''[[Vulpes vulpes]]'' {{a|Carolus Linnaeus|Linnaeus}}, 1758
Botany: ''[[Clematis viticella]]'' {{a|Carolus Linnaeus|L.}} (1753)

One way to circumvent that problem is to use the <code> tag instead, however that will split the example in two since the tag must be added for each separate line:

Zoology: Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus, 1758

Botany: Clematis viticella L. (1753)

If I ever get around to it I might perhaps change all of the examples into wikitables instead. Tables require a lot more code to be added, but probably renders the best looking result:

Zoology: Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus, 1758
Botany: Clematis viticella L. (1753)

According to Wikimedia praxis tables shouldn't be used for visual layout, but in this particular case they would also help legibility and that is of course a good thing.

i didn't realize that pre-tags remove wiki-code. I will try to think about something. - yona b (talk) 08:34, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Tommy Kronkvist I would not know it depends if the main purpose is to see the wiki-code, or to see the result. If it is to see the result table can also go --Samuele2002 (talk) 12:11, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Translating templates

Really need to find solution for having parts of code in messages which we translate. On other wikis it is resolved by modules or template called TNT. --Wargo (talk) 20:34, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Are redirects possible using the translation tool?

The page Wikispecies:Suppress/en is a duplicate and should be redirected to Wikispecies:Oversighters/en. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 01:04, 10 March 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Resolved. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:21, 20 May 2017 (UTC).[reply]

I am not authorised to translate templates!!!

I have been added to Translation administrators group . But I get this message " There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, or search the related logs, but you do not have permission to create this page." Omda4wady (talk) 06:39, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again @Omda4wady. First of all I don't think you should have any problems with creating pages in the template namespace. As far as I know we have very few restriction for creating pages in the template- and main namespaces, and you have indeed already created a few templates (and about 50 translation pages). Having said that, yes we do have restrictions for creating pages used for site interface customization, mainly in the MediaWiki namespace. This includes pages like MediaWiki:References/ar which you mentioned here on the Translation Administrators' Noticeboard (and which I have since created for you). Creation of most (perhaps all?) pages in the MediaWiki namespace is restricted to our "main" Administrators, but as far as I know Translation Administrators should at least be able to edit the pages after they've been created. I may be wrong though, and/or this setting may have been changed by Wikimedia since I last got any information about it. I'll check it out in the next few days, unless another admin does it for us. :-)
In any case, if there are any MediaWiki pages you need to be created in order to continue with your translations, please add a note about it on the Translation Administrators' Noticeboard. Thank you. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 07:54, 10 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
