Use of Creative Commons-licensed Flickr images?[edit]

I'm wondering... There are some outstanding images in specialized streams on Flickr (e.g.: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30703260@N08 ) that have a CC license with them. It would be nice to display these images on the appropriate taxon pages directly (as is done for images from Wikimedia Commons, which also have CC licenses), instead of merely providing a small, boring link at the bottom of the page. Is this possible? Is it kosher?

And, how should I be handling attribution of images? The license text often says something like "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)." I don't see photographers acknowledged directly in Wikispecies, but I realize that clicking the photo takes one to the Commons where the photographer is usually identified. Is this enough?

I searched through Village Pump archives but didn't see these exact issues discussed (sorry if I missed available answers).

Deletion of talk page[edit]

Hello. Thank you for deleting "User talk:Careful With That Axe, Eugene", added by a vandal using an anonymous IP address. I was notified of this by email. I would like to assure you that this was not me, although this would be my WikiSpecies TP if I were to create one (I spend most of my time on Wikipedia). What would happen if I, the rightful user, attempted to re-create this TP for my own use? Please reply either here or on my normal TP here: [1] Many thanks. Usurp request[edit]

Hi, I don't have any experience with these and it seems as though you do. Would you be willing to handle this User_talk:Open2universe#.D7.A9.D7.9C.D7.95.D7.9D or explainn to me what I am supposed to do? Thanks so much.

Main Page typo[edit]

Hello. Thank you for the template welcome. I posted a notification of a typo on the MP talk page which has yet to be acknowledged or actioned. Would you care to take a look? Careful With That Axe, Eugene (talk) 07:57, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. There's another typo on this week's Main Page regarding the magnificent albatross - "vessel" has been entered as "vassal", a wholly different word. Careful With That Axe, Eugene (talk) 10:46, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The sentence I was referring to is "Fishing vassels with their longline fishing hooks and nets are posing a threat to this bird's survival," found within the details of the albatross on the Main Page. I see that I made a mistake in my report ("vassal" instead of "vassel") - I meant to suggest replacing "vassel" with "vessel". Ah, the irony! Captcha[edit]

Hi, Ohana,

could you, please, help KuziasBot with the problem of Captcha? It arises when it tries to add a template with external links. Another question is whether I have a right to run a bot for simple tasks at first without an approval? Kuzia (talk) 08:46, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that case I just experimented with redirects: the idea was to supply the bot with a list of redirect pairs and let it do the whole boring task, and that was fine. But the problem I'm talking about was with templates that link to external sources: e.g. the Bot was able to add Template:LSN10 without parameters but failed when a page number was supplied (in that case an external link is created).
OK, I should ask for an approval: that certainly will solve the problem (and will make things fair).
The idea of automatic species page creation (I'm thinking of red species links on pages of genera: we shouldn't automatically download whole taxonomies) is rather straightforward: for my job I implemented a series of modules that work with several databases like WoRMS-projects and IndexFungorum. So, that's just a question of species list composition. Kuzia (talk) 22:06, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Corynoptera images[edit]

Hi,

thanks for asking about images of Sciaridae. I have a lot photographs of male claspers and other parts, which I plan to upload some time. I am still not quite sure, if it is allowed to copy images from publications, even if the papers are open access. In the long term I am plannig to create species pages with all relevant information on Species-ID. Images may then be cross-linked from there.

Cheers, Kai Kheller (talk) 18:29, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrew,
sorry for the late reply. For Sciaridae it does not make much sense to upload photographs of many different species, because they are much too similar in their general aspect. But I have some ideas to combine the habitus with the more distinctive male genialia. As soon as my next paper is published I will try to present some of my photos on wikispecies. If I needed some help I would come back to your kind offer of assistance.

zfg[edit]

Hi, Andrew,

Stephen seems to ignore my person. Could you help me: what's the purpose for Template:zfg? Should we use it everywhere for family level taxa? Kuzia (talk) 21:33, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As usual, the issues are complex, and I haven't got time to explain fully. It is a very common convention in taxonomic literature to capitalize family-group names in zoology (just like italicizing species and genus-group names), eg. see:

Template:Urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:EAA376B7-6783-4FE4-8B33-BC0A0418B819 then only family-group names, genus-group names, and species-group names are quoted with author/date, not higher level names. Stho002 (talk) 21:50, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've replied on User talk:Stho002. Let us discuss the question there. Kuzia (talk) 05:18, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about we move on and add good content to the site without getting hung up on minor formatting issues??? Stho002 (talk) 05:22, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you consider me a bore - that's good. The structure of taxa templates in WS is extremely useful and we shouldn't make major changes to it. WS is used as a source for taxonomy and we should follow some standards in design. It's not a database, it's wiki, so we have to maintain the standards. It's not hard to make all families in small caps (that's a work for a bot for ca. 3 days). But I see no necessity in that. Furthermore I'd recommend to remove that style. Kuzia (talk) 05:51, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Andrew,

please, make a look at our "dialogues" with Stephen. Something is going wrong. Kuzia (talk) 20:40, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Male/female[edit]

Yeah, I knew I should have corrected that, too, but I was too focused on the other thing I was doing to go copy one from one of Alan's pages. Thanks for fixing it. There are a lot of problems with formatting in the way that editor adds pictures to pages, and I was trying to decide how deep I wanted to get into fixing them all just now. ID[edit]

Hey OhanaUnited

For my uploaded image, File:Figure of M. acidophyla.png. I am not the author of the image, so I am not Prof. Wim Bert; my name is Dennis Vlaeminck. But he is my boss and he asked me to make a wikipage for the new species. He provided me with the images from the article... If you doubt my work relation to him, you can always email him: wim.bert@ugent.be and confirm that I can use his images.

Need your help[edit]

If you have some time please look through this discussion. To my mind Stho002 have completely forgotten about civility. Mithril (talk) 07:08, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, I completely agree. Someone (preferably an admin or bureaucrat, since that's apparently the only users here whose opinions he values) needs to explain to him how an admin should behave. - dcljr (talk) 04:14, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Following your reply, it is important that someone unblocks this bot, because it updates/removes links to deleted files only once. Category:Pages with broken file links contains pages that should be updated while CommonsDelinker is blocked. I've reverted its remaining removals on this project and the queue has been emptied by Multichill, so please consider unblocking it. Mathonius (talk) 15:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Strange category[edit]
