Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and a belated welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you are enjoying being here. Here are some pages you might not yet have found:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at the Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!

Help Section[edit]

Hello and welcome. Have a good look through the Help Section available on a link to the left. This will enable you to create Taxon Pages that conform to our consensus. Best Regards Andyboorman (talk) 13:33, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Andyboorman. I don't have much experience in Wikispecies and I hope I haven't made many mistakes. I wanted to add some species of plant (mainly endemic species from Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula), which are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. Best, Спасимир (talk) 13:44, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No problems. However, I have had to edit some of your contributions as they are synonyms or unaccepted. I suggest that you look at the genus page before adding a species. The Reference Section should have links to resources that you can use to check your possible addition. What I suggest you do now is to stop adding new pages and go through your contributions to date. Check them with sources such as COL, IPNI and so on. Get a feel for how we layout pages and what sources we use to get useful information. Also have a look through the templates we use by scanning through completed pages. Good luck it seems daunting at first but in a few days you should be OK! Best regards Andyboorman (talk) 13:55, 7 September 2018 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you so much for the advice. I will check them. Best, Спасимир (talk) 14:04, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great any problems drop me a message on my talk page. Good idea about going through Red Book of Bulgaria, but do a double check for presently accepted names as opposed to synonyms or older names. Also try to complete References we like that as this site is much more scientific compared to Wikipedia, Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 20:08, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Taxa by author" categories[edit]

Hi Spasimir! Here's a friendly hint: Please see this edit for a shorter and perhaps quicker (but still correct!) format when creating "Taxa by author" categories. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 12:13, 8 September 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Hello, thank you very much for your help and guidance.--Спасимир (talk) 13:10, 8 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. Also, please note that the above suggested syntax is in no way mandatory. If you wish to continue using the "old" syntax that is fine too. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:17, 8 September 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Author categories by nationality[edit]

Please note that the use of author categories by nationality is unrecommended. They might be useful at Wikipedia but here at Wikispecies we don't need the categories to be that specific, since true taxonomy knows no national borders. Hence the Category:Bulgarian botanists you recently created has been deleted. All the authors that was listed in it has been moved to Category:Botanists instead. Please see the discussion at "Author categories by nationality" in the Village Pump for details. This same guideline of course also applies to categories for zoologists, palaeontologist, geneticists, etc. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 19:51, 8 September 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Hopefully helpful edits[edit]

Hello Spasimir. I have made some edits of pages you created and edited. I hope they show you more or less complete taxon page in the format WS prefers and some basic references. The pages are - Crepis stojanovii and Tulipa suaveolens. I edited the later, as it is the accepted name for Tulipa splendens Delip. (1976) a page you created. Now to be assured that I was right in making the synonym and redirect I used World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP). This source is about 99% correct and when I find there is a problem they are more than willing to review and correct if needed, being based at Kew Botanic Gardens gives us confidence, of course. Unfortunately, they do not have all genera or species in their database, but they are complete for monocots. The second online source that is useful for checking is Catalogue of Life and the World Plants side is managed by Michael Hassler at respected botanist at Karlsruhe, Germany. Again Michael is happy to review any queries and make changes as required. Plant names must be checked using International Plant Names Index (IPNI), as you can see from the two taxa pages above this is some 99.5% accurate and will review and change if required. If you look through the pages you will also see some basic use of common WS templates. This should be enough for now, but your English is great by the way! Best regards.
