On web, quite massively is used Sideroxylon canariensis. Is it invalid name or accepted synonym? Also related is file renaming in Commons, see commons:File:Sideroxylon canariensis.jpg--Estopedist1 (talk) 17:32, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Estopedist1. In the article where the species was described is named as Sideroxylon canariense. I guess that in the web is more popular to use canariensis as most of the endemic species from the Canary Islands are called canariensis.

Here you have the first article about this species: The genus Sideroxylon (Sapotaceae) on the Madeira,Canary Islands and Cape Verde archipelagoes

And an official article from the Spanish government: Sideroxylon canariense Leyens, Lobin & A. Santos

Also S. canariense is in WCSP!! Irony or what? Please note no government is a taxonomic authority, but their publications have the same status as local floras and databases. Andyboorman (talk) 10:46, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not particularly familiar with plant nomenclature at all, but if this is like with ICZN surely it depends on what gender the name "Sideroxylon" has? carariensis and carariense appear to me to be the same name but with different endings -is and -e. Not always the same with ICBN 'on is masculine and 'ense neuter, but species epithets do not have to change if they are based upon nouns, but must change if based upon adjectives or participles - canariense is a noun think Canary Sideroxylon. Given that countries/islands are usually considered feminine, so technically 'ensis is more appropriate, but this is not an auto-correct given the epithet is base upon a noun. Big tip look at IPNI, they usually auto-correct and move on from there. It is S. canariense by protologue and consensus, thereforeSideroxylon canariensis is invalid. Ah, that makes sense then. Monster Iestyn (talk) 21:55, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
