- Etymology: from Ancoent Greek φοίνιος (blood-red), refers to the color of the disc.
- Type locality: Buccoo reef, Tobago. Carnegie Expedition, April 1916.
- Holotype: MCZ OPH-4165
- Paratypes: MCZ OPH-4166; OPH-4207
