Etmopterus benchleyi Vásquez et al., 2015

  • Holotype: USNM 423195.
  • Paratypes: USNM 423209, 422645, 422639, 421539, 421389, 421394, 422489.

Type locality: Costa Rica, 8°13’42” N, 83°09’47” W, bottom trawl at depth 1157–1260 m.

Etymology: The species is named in honor of Peter Benchley, author of Jaws and subsequently an avid shark conservationist. His legacy, the Benchley Awards, recognizes outstanding achievements in ocean conservation.
