Name
[edit]Cordia L., Sp. Pl 1: 190 (1753), nom. cons.
- Type species: Cordia myxa L., Sp. Pl.: 190 (1753), typ. cons.
- Note: Once designated by Britton & Shafer (1908), but many botanists ignored this designation and tended to choose other two species of this genus described by Linnaeus (1753), i.e. C. sebestena or C. glabra (= Bourreria succulenta Jacq.), the latter of which even Britton himself in collaboration with Wilson adopted as type species in Sci. Surv. Porto Rico & Virgin Islands 2: 125 (1925). With unsuitability of designation of C. glabra as type, Verdcourt has considered that it would be wise to retypify this genus with C. myxa in preparation for future split (see Verdcourt 1991: 3–4).
