Name[edit]

  • Bibimys chacoensis (Shamel, 1931)

Holotype: USNM 236239, adult ♂, skin and skull.

Type locality: “Las Palmas, Chaco, Argentina.” According to the itinerary of Alexander Wetmore (1926:3), the collector of the type, he arrived at Puerto Las Palmas on July 12, 1920, and immediately traveled to “the little village of Las Palmas, headquarters for a large estancia, that covered 60 leagues of land.” There, Wetmore worked until August 2. Thus, the type specimen of chacoensis was secured somewhere around the current town of Las Palmas (ca. 27.0485°S, 58.6889°W), Bermejo, Chaco province, Argentina.
