Image[edit]

An image of yours is considered for deletion because the copyright information is insufficient. Please react at wikispecies:Images for deletion. It is possible that the image is not yet listed there; see Category:Wikispecies:Images noinfo or one of the other subcategories of Category:Images instead in that case.

Vandal[edit]

Hi Lycaon. A smart guy was vandalizing wikispecies earlier today, he is active with adding porn to pages on other wiki's as well. He uploaded an image called Image:Wikionary-logo-en.png, which I deleted. But maybe he first had overwritten this? I can't see it in the logs, but can you tell if this picture (the original one) needs to be present?

Ucucha (talk) 14:43, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

tja, die vierde verbuiging, 't is lang geleden :-). Bedankt voor de tip. Lycaon 16:19, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Chironomidae Taxobox, Image[edit]

Hi Lycaon,

it's a great pitty that taxoboxes are not allowed. Because they are prettier and more practical. They need not so much place ;-). But that's community. It's OK --A.Plank 16:25, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Nieuw voorstel[edit]

Ucucha (talk) 03:48, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

blanking pages[edit]

If you wish to have a page deleted, please tag it with {{Delete}} instead of just blanking it. This way it will show up on the Category:Candidates for speedy deletion page and they can all be wiped away quickly. Thanks! - UtherSRG (talk) 12:42, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Insecta formating[edit]

Hi. In answer to your message, I was planing to update the taxonomic navigation for all the pages in the Insecta, it's just a question of times. They are a lot of pages, and I don't have so much time to spend on this site right now. For the italic font in the Acrida page ; it isn't me who have entered this species, I've just formated the taxonomic navigation. But if I see such thing in an other page, I'll do this correction.

Zeehonden[edit]

Please make a redirect when you think a subgenus is no longer valid, instead of just deleting it. In any case, Pusa and Pagophilus are probably valid; see for example McKenna & Bell (1997) and Rice (1998). Ucucha (talk) 08:18, 30 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Axiidae problem...[edit]

I'm not sure if I write to the good person for such problems, but I think that you'll can answer me. I'm quit confused with this family name... that look like this name was give to two different families ; one in the Decapoda, and one in the Lepidoptera (in the superfamily Drepanoidea). As well as I know, it's not supposed to be so. And that look like the informations are good for the two orders. I've tried to see if the name was changed in a taxon or the other, but I can't find anything about that. So, what I'm supposed to do if I want to create the page Axiidae in the Lepidoptera? since the page in the Decapoda is already created...

Answer[edit]

Thanks for your fast answer; I'll do like you said. And sorry for the signature, I just didn't think to that; I'm habituated that my message are automatically signed. But I'll finish by know all the technicality of this webpage. Trépas 17:27, 31 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

taxonomic comments[edit]

I actually regard taxonomic comments as something relevant to the article and not something that should be relegated to the talk. See any of the primates articles for an example. These comments were taken from Mammal Species of the World, 3rd ed. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:19, 11 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I guess I agree in most cases, but here they were a bit—how shall I put it—'difficult' to read, and I wanted to have Trépas have his say before it came on the article-page (I'm not a specialist in up-to-date Hexapoda systematics).
And, btw, thanks for helping cleaning up after this morning's attack. What a mess that was. Lycaon 15:27, 11 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Ah. Ok. *grins* Yes, it helps to have someone in the know or connected to well written material to make some judgement calls. Today's attack was pretty bad.... but it's been quiet for quite some time. I thought he'd finaly gotten bored or that juvenile nonsense. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:26, 11 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Diplura and Protura[edit]

I'm not very inquired into the systematic of these two classes: it's probably the 2 Hexapoda taxons that I least know. The most recent book that I have, show them as a class and an order, but they are very vague about this. I have to go see my entomology professor at university next week; I'll ask him what he think about that, and if he know a recent source about the systematic of the Diplura and Protura. I'll add a commentary after that. Trépas 23:34, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

double checking[edit]

I used to check every edit, or at least as many as I could. My real life work got turned on and so I haven't had as much thumb-twiddling time to do double checks. I happened to see you slip, so I fixed it. At least you know you haven't made *that* mistake before. ;) - UtherSRG [[User_talk:UtherSRG|(talk)]] 19:09, 22 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ha Ha Ha ... no no man , i will just try to translate the main pages : kingdoms , Phylum , .. , not all species . it is just for making the Taxonomy clear in Arabic Wikipedia . nice to meet you --Chaos 12:09, 30 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Genus - Genera ??[edit]

When write Genus and when Genera. Lot of Artikel write Genera when are lots of Species and in another Artikel Genus when too lots of Species. For me is Genus for one and Genera for many. Gruß--Viki 21:41, 30 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

z.B., for exemple: Genus: Ceratogyrus, Avicularia
Genera: Harpactirinae, Eumenophorinae

Move request[edit]

I see you created (Crinoidea) Articulata. Seeing as how this is the only (non-redirect, main space) page that starts with a parenthesis, it should probably be moved to Articulata (Crinoidea) and then Articulata moved to Articulata (Cyclostomata). Or whatever. - dcljr 00:02, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

For Chinese project[edit]

Now the Chinese users are proposing a way to construct a Chinese wikispecies (perhaps can be also compatible for Japanese and so on). Please at the moment keep these redirect and don't remove them, as we still need some discussions. Speed[edit]

Yes, I have an Excel spreadsheet with a macro which generates a text file. This alternates navigation commands:

http://species.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Acridotheres_cristatellus&action=edit

with the data which I want to paste to that page (this being quicker than using wiki navigation given frequently slow response times). Once I've remembered the italics and the nbsp's I can upload pages as fast as wiki will go. It's rather specific to birds though, as it is merging subspecies data from Avibase with citation data from Zoonomen. You might do better starting from scratch rather than trying to hack my code - how are you on Visual Basic?--Keith Edkins 07:59, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've uploaded the spreadsheet here [1] - there are some vaguely explanatory comments in the Macro. ctrl-q runs the macro (WARNING do not accept macros from strangers!) The output location is hard-coded and would need changing before running.--Keith Edkins 22:21, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Formatting[edit]

Hi Lycaon,

Thanks for those tips, and also for cleaning up some of my entries. I noted the use of small caps and bold, too. I'd been using the wrong pages as templates, and will follow the layout used on the Lonchophylla orcesi page in future.

In a species entry, should the basionym go in the Taxonomic information section before the type locality?

Obsolete taxa[edit]

Is deleting the best thing to do, or should they be made redirect pages in case somebody comes along who doesn't know Ajaia is now part of Platalea? I'm not convinced there is such a thing as an obsolete taxon, which some community of taxonomists doesn't still fondly cling to! Admittedly I missed that one while adding a subfamily level. I will try and do at least something sensible with them in future.--Keith Edkins 13:12, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Generos y familias[edit]

I have checked that some genera are complicated to find, especially for the novice, among all those subgenus, tribes, subtribes, sections and series, so I would suggest to put all the genera the family has in the family page before splitting them.

Adding species only[edit]

I don't have enough time to do it. I have specialized myself to add species only. I would appreciate your help to list all the species under their related genus. Can you please list those species under their genus? I could not use the excel spreadsheet. I suppose you may do it easier. --Alperen 12:04, 21 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think I'm going to use templates for every species that I add. That way, you can adapt all the species easier, as you know when you change something in the template it will show in all the species. Would it be better for you? --Alperen 19:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I have problems with your taxa spreadsheet. I couldn't use it anyway. The main page is protected and moreover I can not get the desired result from the other templates. Why did you remove the description sections of Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae? If you had a good reason, I would like to know. question[edit]

Why do you remove explanations from Wikispecies pages? Is your goal to make Wikispecies of no use to anyone but experts? --JWSchmidt 04:57, 3 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nope, on the contrary, we want wikispecies to be useful for everyone, regardless of their language. As such English prose is as much as possible avoided and left to en:wikipedia. Likewise for other languages. Via interwikis, links are laid to all different language wikipedias. I personally advocate a split up in Interwikis and Vernacular name, btw. Sorry for the somewhat late reply. — Lycaon 16:32, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Link Fixage[edit]

Hi Lycaon, please fix the link on the overview page for Curcuma sp. The link of C. ochrorhiza is directing to C. ochorhiza, but correct sp. name is C. ochrorhiza. The same for C. sparganifolia. Correct name is C. sparganifolia. not C. sparganiifolia. The pages for the (correct) individual species are already there. Thanks in advance--Steven69 10:37, 4 July 2006 (UTC).Reply

Chinese characters[edit]

Hi Lycaon, thanks for fixing the links. Another question: Is there the possibility, (when yes, how?) to display chinese script characters in the species description. This would be needed for displaying exact spelling and meaning of chinese characters in transliterations and would help for characterisations and identifications. Thanks for answer in advance--Steven69 16:18, 5 July 2006 (CST).

First of all, a small note: please do not alter the entries on this page and add new content at the bottom. That said, for chinese (or other 'symbolic' characters, the easiest way—I think—is to copy and paste them from a chinese website or the chinese wikipedia. It works fine for interwiki-links. Deleting Locality Data info On Species Descriptions[edit]

Hi, was wondering why you deleted the locality and distributions data on the species of turtles I added namely Chelodina canni and Elseya albagula. I would have thought this info added to the accuracy of the article and I know its accurate to the descriptions as I actually described both species. Faendalimas 11:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. May I refer you to Current_events#How a taxon page content should be structured? The info you added is evidently valuable, but should be added to the relevant articles in en:wikipedia (and subsequently translated to other languages). As we want to keep wikispecies as international as possible, we try to avoid English prose as much as possible. -- Lycaon 09:56, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of pictures[edit]

Hi Lycaon. Some of the pictures I uploaded a few days ago have been deleted. When I first began to upload images, I didn't know the rules of the copyright, and I have no objection to do to that deletion.

But, some other images have been obtained from a place where the distribution is universal and free, as for the babyrousa image.

http://recursos.cnice.mec.es/bancoimagenes/condiciones.html

"La utilización de los contenidos del Banco de Imágenes es universal, gratuita y abierta, siempre y cuando se trate de un uso educativo no comercial".

"The use of the contents of this bank of images is universal, free and open, as long as it is used for educational and not commercial purposes".

I found this presentation more informative than the alphabetic list of classes without any distinction between fish and tetrapods. There is clearly a lack of subdivision between gnathostomata & amniotes.PA 20:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your answer. May I have your opinion about my suggestions.

Favicon[edit]

I have noticed that the disscusion in the Village Pump has slowed to a dead standstill. How should I give you the icons?

CommonsTicker[edit]

Thanks for working on some of the CommonsTicker suggestions. I was only dealing with images that were actually deleted. Sometimes images are marked for deletion and then unmarked. I had been physically striking out a section when I was done, but that was silly because the style sheet lets one do it by setting the status. If you set a status = done then it will strike through the whole entry. I may add some other statuses as they have done at en:wikinews. I have also been archiving it on a monthly basis. Thanks again. How to deal with new species names[edit]

There's already some discussion on how to deal with species that have gotten a new name, or even have been moved into a new familia, in the [Village_Pump]. But what exactly is the standard we are going to use on Wikispecies?

My own idea for now was to mention all species and to redirect outdated species, to the ones that are considered to be the standard since the publication of some source. On the standard species name page, one can then mention the outdated synonym(s).
Ofcourse this would give outdated entries, but, in my view, they are necessary, since older literature is still using the older names. If we would simply discard the older entries, then people using the older literature will miss our information.

Please some guidelines on this matter.

Would you please undelete Ampelodesmos mauritanica?[edit]

Would you please undelete Ampelodesmos mauritanica? I know it has been superseded by Ampelodesmos mauritanicus but it is still known in some places known as Ampelodesmos mauritanica so I think the redirect is appropriate. Thanks Open2universe 00:50, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another species of Melilotus[edit]

Hello Lycaon. In the Melilotus's page I took the species that I knew. I did'nt knew that they are others species. Sorry. But I never said that the page Melilotus is a "finish" page.--Gretaz 18:58, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dracaena[edit]

Sorry for not doing the taxonavigation properly. Most of the times, I just copy and paste from other species, changing the names for the correct ones, but this does not seem to work. I'll try to do it better next time. Nanosanchez

Problems linking[edit]

I do not know why but sometimes, some images are impossible to link. As it happens for exemple with: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:EuphorbiaPolychroma.jpg in Euphorbia epithymoides

Thanks... Nanosanchez

Subspieces but no species?[edit]

I have another question. Arthonia astroidea at some point in time has been renamed to something else, according to Fungorum [2] However, A. astroidea has 2 'children'. Genus Arthonia is a big genus and has several of species like A. astroidea. How do you deal with a case like this? Anything else besides adding an unassigned link, which would look really ugly. Thanks again Kempm 22:13, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Newly described species[edit]

Tjeck out the newly established Zoobank.org. Under alerts you can see the newest added species. Also tjeck out the journal zootaxa (www.mapress.com/zootaxa) for many new species. Isfisk 16:17, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Homininae[edit]

Thanks for fixing up the subfamilia Homininae. I realized after adding the tribes Hominini and Gorillini that the Genus Pierolapithecus didn't have a spot in them, so I just guessed based on how some other pages looked (i.e. Mammalia). Should that issue come up in the future I'll use your edit as a guide. (or I'll just ask you first). LunceFordPrefect 18:01, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kikkers[edit]

Lycaon 20:46, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
