Main page images[edit]

I don't understand what you're saying in this edit. The Commons "Featured pictures" are chosen only as exceptional photographs, and have nothing to do with fairness, diversity, or even appropriate depiction of the subject. Their criteria for "featured" status concern solely whether an image is striking and high quality, not the subject of the photo. Why not update from Template:MP pictures/proposals, which was set up for that reason? --EncycloPetey (talk) 04:58, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Commons lacks featured pictures for most species. We can't rely on using featured pictures. A Commons picture is a pretty picture, but not a good illustration of a species. We should not rely on choosing featured pictures from Commons. Consider: the picture of Papaver nudicaule shows only the center of a flower. It does not show the kind of plant, so it is a poor choice for a picture of the plant. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:55, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your taking time to rotate the images on the Main Page, but we are now featuring 3 mammals out of 5 pictures, 1 bird and a dead tree. Perhaps some variety including invertebrates or fish might give a better impression. Accassidy (talk) 17:25, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The main page is still featuring almost exclusively animals: all vertebreates and arthropods. Please include plants, soft-bodied invertebrtates, and microorganisms in your selections. The past month of selections have been strongly biased. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:49, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
