Hi Iwan204,

I saw your Buthus occitanus page, and will try to help a little. You made a good start, but I recommend studying the Help section for detailed advice on how to edit WikiSpecies.

Perhaps the best way to learn (and the primary way that I learned - and am still learning) is to browse through existing pages, click the "Edit" links on them (upper right corner of each page), and study the structure of the pages to see how it makes the pages appear the way they do. When there is a page that is similar to a new one you want to create (perhaps a page for a different species of the same genus you are working on), you can click "Edit", select and copy all the text, then create your new page and paste. Thus, you have an exact copy of the other page. Now you can edit it to make it for your species of interest. Always use the "Show preview" button (below the edit box) to make sure the page displays as you intend, before you hit "Save page."

If you want to create a new species page for a genus that's already in WikiSpecies, start on the genus page and add the name of the species you want to add (if it's not already named there). I have done this for you on the Buthus page. Note that only the (alphabetically) last species listed for a genus gets the "{{splast..." tag (which suppresses the space and hyphen after the name that otherwise appears between species names). Thus, for your species, I inserted B. occitanus
below the entry for B. jianxinae – (since jianxinae is alphabetized before occitanus).

After you save the page with the added species name, the species will appear with a red link, meaning that page does not exist yet. When you click the red link, it takes you to a new, blank page already named with the name of the taxon you clicked. Then you can paste the text you copied from a similar page, and edit away.

Please note that, although the information you entered for B. occitanus may be interesting, it is *not* the kind of information that belongs in WikiSpecies (it would be more appropriate on a page in Wikipedia). Therefore, I have moved it to the Talk page (tab at upper left of Buthus occitanus page) and, on the main B. occitanus page, replaced it with the kind of information needed in this Wiki.

Also, the complex taxon navigation information that you placed at the top of the page can, and should, be entered in a different way - which, fortunately, is also easier. Again, I have changed it to the way it should be, so you can see what is needed. (Your original entry and all edits are always maintained in the audit trail for the page, which you can see with the "View history" link at top right of each page).

I'm one of the administrators of WS; I or one of the others can help if you get stuck (many other admins have more experience than I do).

Good luck and have fun, MKOliver (talk) 20:28, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
