Talk:Trichochrysea hirta
Status of viridis
[edit]I am not sure if the viridis name is currently treated as a synonym of this species, a subspecies of it, or even a valid species of its own. Here's what I know so far:
- Originally, it was a valid species of its own.
- In
{{Gressitt & Kimoto, 1961}}
, it is a synonym of Trichochrysea nitidissima (so far as I can tell). - In
{{Kimoto & Gressitt, 1982}}
, it is a synonym of Trichochrysea hirta. - In
{{Medvedev & Eroshkina, 1999}}
, viridis is revived from synonymy as a valid subspecies of hirta.
From this point, the trail goes cold for me, as it seems to be treated differently depending on the source:
- Mevedev, 2007 mentions it briefly as being a possible synonym of Trichochrysea hirta, but nothing more. No later publications by Medvedev ever mention viridis alongside hirta so far as I know in what's available online (nor do they give trinomials for hirta altogether, suggesting it no longer uses subspecies).
- Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera vol. 6 (from 2010) follows Medvedev & Eroshkina, 1999 in treating viridis as a subspecies
- Meanwhile, some Chinese websites as well as iNaturalist treat it as a valid species Trichochrysea viridis, with its own common name even. Did a Chinese author maybe restore it as a species in a Chinese work, possibly in the 2000s? I have no way of knowing for the moment.

- It appears that Fauna Sinica. Insect Vol. 40. from 2005 did indeed treat it as a valid species (according to its contents), but since I cannot currently view the text itself I do not know whether this was relying on outdated literature or is an intentional upgrade from subspecies status.
