Talk:Stachys

There is conflicting evidence for the circumscription of this genus. The species list on the page has been obtained from World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP, Govaerts et al, 2014) and is a traditional view of Stachys s.l..
However, recent findings from phylogenetic evidence, among their conclusions, supported the resurrection of Betonica as a distinct genus and the incorporation of Sideritis into Stachys. Moreover, it also suggested that a newly subscribed Betonica may lay outside the Stachydeae, perhaps more closely related to Galeopsis (Lamioideae, incertae sedis). Finally, the phytogenetic evidence will probably require a complete re-circumscription of the whole of Stachydeae from tribe through to species. (Scheen et al, 2010 and Salmakia et al, 2013).
In direct contradiction to this, a study that reviewed a comprehensive range of taxochemical and biological evidence came to the opposite conclusions, namely Betonica belongs in Stachys and Sideratis is a distinct genus (Tundis et al, 2014). It thus is in general support of WCSP and Stachys s.l. as traditionally described.
Therefore, it is proposed that Wikispecies follow Govaerts et al until the evidence for change becomes clearer. (see main page for full details of references). Andyboorman (talk) 18:57, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
