Authority?

[edit]

No information on the authority for the name "Salinellidae" seems to be available anywhere to my knowledge. As far as I can tell for instance, Frenzel himself did not give a family name for his new genus Salinella in any of his articles on it in 1891/1892.

The earliest mention of "Salinellidae" in the scientific literature that I can find seems to be in 1900, in Kosmos (Lwów), vol. 25 (available online at [1]), page 446, in a Polish language article by Benedykt Dybowski on Polish zoological vocabulary ("Parę słów dotyczących słownictwa zoologicznego polskiego", starting at page 438). But I'm somewhat doubtful that Dybowski coined this name here, so I expect it was published in an earlier article that I'm not aware of yet.

(Note: being a family-group name, "Salinellidae" could have been published in a vernacular form first, such as "Salinelliden" in German. I have not found any such vernacular name in use, however.) Monster Iestyn (talk) 00:12, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
