Note on Pyropida

Pyropida Baly, 1862 is probably a synonym of Rhyparida Baly, 1861, but no recent publications seem to acknowledge this properly. Below I give a timeline showing why I believe this to be so:

• 1862: Pyropida was established by Baly, 1862, with type species Pyropida sumptuosa from Malacca in Peninsular Malaysia (p. 450, p. 451).
• 1867: Pyropida is rather quietly synonymised with Rhyparida by Baly, 1867, by combination of its type species with the latter genus (p. 163).
• 1874: Chapuis, 1874 restored Pyropida as a valid genus (p. 298), comparing it to Metachroma (apparently also treating Rhyparida as a synonym of Metachroma).
• 1877: Baly, 1877 gives his opinion on the above (p. 40), saying that Chapuis had made a singular error regarding the lengths of the antennae segments.
• Despite Baly's comment, Pyropida was treated as valid in later publications such as Lefèvre, 1885 (p. 98), Clavareau, 1914 (p. 97) and Seeno & Wilcox, 1982 (p. 52).
• Yet, as recently as 2004 at least, Pyropida sumptuosa is treated as a species of Rhyparida in Mohamedsaid, 2004 (p. 44). This would imply Pyropida is considered a synonym of Rhyparida, but since the catalogue does not list synonyms of genera this is not stated anywhere.

I would therefore list Pyropida Baly, 1862 as a synonym of Rhyparida Baly, 1861, but I am wary because this might be edging towards original research. So I'll leave it out for now until a new article actually clears up the status of Pyropida (unless someone on Wikispecies disagrees with me and thinks it should be listed anyway?).
