Priapulida vs. Priapula (same phylum, 2 names)[edit]

Ruggiero et al., 2015, followed by ITIS, use the name Priapula for this phylum; ITIS notes:

"It appears that 'Priapulida' is an older spelling than 'Priapula.' There is apparently disagreement on which spelling is 'correct' in the literature, although this is an unregulated rank with regard to spelling and 'priority.' ITIS is currently following Ruggiero et al. (2015) and Sørensen in Brusca et al. (2016) in using Priapula for the group name."

Ruggiero et al's treatment was intended to be the basis for the classification to be used in Catalogue of Life, however when I go there today I find they use "Priapulida" which is the name I orginally used in my system for this phylum based on Parker, 1982, Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms, and still seems to be the preferred name in most literature at this time. The CoL taxon page https://www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/B8VF9 is based on WoRMS https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=101063 , which is given the citation today as "Paulay, G. (2024). World List of Priapulida. Priapulida. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=101063 on 2024-04-13".

So I am not suggesting that the name of this page be changed, however it might be worth noting "Priapula" as a synonym / alternative name, with a note on its usage perhaps. Thoughts? Tony 1212 (talk) 03:13, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
