The family is reconised as monophyletic, but there is only partial consensus regarding generic circumscription. Please note that Catalogue of Life recognises only the following genera for the family; Calandrinia, Cistanthe, Claytonia, Hectorella, Lenzia, Lewisia, Lyallia, Montia, Montiopsis, Phemeranthus, Schreiteria, but the taxon page follows Nyffeler & Eggli (2010) and Ogburn & Edwards (2015). However, taxon pages for the genera also reference local flora as appropriate and where there are differences in generic circumscription this is noted. Note: The circumscription of this family sensu Nyffeler & Eggli, (2010) is not fully accepted by all authorities, particularly in relation to Calandrinia/Parakeelya/Rumicastrum and Cistanthe/Philippiamra - see individual taxon pages for more detail.
