It is generally accepted that there are some 350 species in the genus not over 500 as indicated by COL. Studies of the circumscription of the genus are complicated by hybridisation, numerous putative microspecies and apomictic taxa that are able to out-breed (Hernández-Ledesma et al. 2015). This situation always presents taxonomists with dilemmas when producing species circumscriptions. However, given this recent studies with a range of species always show that the genus is monophyletic Akhani (2013), Brullo & Erben (2016), Hernández-Ledesma et al. (2015) and Lledó (2005).
