There is a problem with the phylogenetic analyses and taxonomy with regards to the supposed congeneric circumscription or segregation with Kayea. Firstly, two combinations in the later have no equivalence in Mesua, that is; K. borneensis and K. scalarinervosa. Secondly, the combinations used in the phylogenetic analyses by Ruhfel et al. (2011, 2013 & 2016) and Cabral et al. (2021) are placed in the synonymy of Mesua by Govaerts et al. (2021), they are; K. elmeri, K. hexapetala, K. oblongifolia and K. stylosa. These combinations are separated in the tree by genera including; Caraipa, Haploclathra, Kielmeyera and Mammea. Thirdly, the type species K. floribunda is circumscribed as M. floribunda by Govaerts et al. (2021) rendering the protologue for Kayea misleading and the type non designatus. I will seek advice from RBG Kew. Andyboorman (talk) 20:20, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that phylogenetically Mesua is more or less monotypic and all other Mesua-Keyea combinations can be transferred here assuming there are equivalents. See refs on Calophyllaceae home page. Andyboorman (talk) 14:01, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
