This subdivision contains all orders of insects that have a holometabola (complex) development, that is, insects with a pupal stade between the larval and the adult stade.

Some superorders have been proposed for the Endopterygota, but the analysis is not finished. For now, three hypothetical groups have been postulated: the Amphiesmenoptera, the Neuropterida and the Antliophora. For now, the Coleoptera, the Strepsiptera and the Hymenoptera have not been included in any group.
