Talk:Chiloscyllium
Disorderly sharks
[edit]The species list of our Chiloscyllium page is most likely not coherent with present nomenclature. Is anyone up for fixing it? Here's the current list:
- C. arabicum
- C. burmensis
- †C. frequens
- C. griseum
- C. hasseltii
- C. indicum
- C. plagiosum
- C. punctatum
- †C. vulloi
FishBase
[edit]FishBase(external link) currently presents these species as valid (all below are Wikispecies links, except for the BHL one):
- C. arabicum – Gubanov, 1980 in Gubanov & Shleib, N.A. (Eds.) Sharks of the Arabian Gulf. Kuwait Ministry of Public Works, Agracultural Department, Fisheries Division. Page 14, Figs. 6–7. [Not seen.]
- C. burmense – Dingerkus & DeFino, 1983 (see template Dingerkus & DeFino, 1983)
- C. caeruleopunctatum – Pellegrin, 1914 (see template Pellegrin, 1914)
- C. griseum – Müller & Henle, 1838 (see template Müller & Henle, 1838–1841)
- C. hasseltii – Bleeker, 1852 (see template Bleeker, 1852a)
- C. indicum – (Gmelin, 1789) (see Squalus indicum on page 1503 in BHL, and template Gmelin, 1789-T1P3)
- C. plagiosum – (Anonymous [Bennett], 1830) [see template Bennett, 1830)
- C. punctatum – Müller & Henle, 1838 (see template Müller & Henle, 1838–1841)
Note that the FishBase list is not identical to the list in our Wikispecies page. Furthermore, the FishBase list is most likely also incomplete, however the data as such looks correct and is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, i.e. "CoF".
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes
[edit]CoF is normally much more up-to-date than FishBase, but for once they seem a bit behind the curve as well.
You can find CoF's page about the Chiloscyllium genus here and then use the search function on that page in order to look up their data on the separate species. Please note that CoF's search function can sometimes be a bit fiddly and/or too exhaustive. It might be easier to go through FishBase (for example the type species, here) and then click the CoF "species" link where it says "Catalog of Fishes (genus, species)" below the map on the FishBase page. Unfortunately this introduces a catch-22 situation since FishBase only lists links to Catalog of Fishes for species that are present in the FishBase database, and their database is outdated.
Somehow there must be a way around this though. Remember: the truth is out there! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:22, 16 June 2024 (UTC).
