Potentially inconsistent naming of journals[edit]

@Monster Iestyn:

You might want to take a look here (and other relevant pages) at the journals cited here as "Annaes da Academia Brasileira de Sciencias" and "Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências", it seems the first and last part of the journal name and the preferred spelling of might have changed around 1941, and the sources are inconsistent. I've applied the same ISSN to which ever spelling, not sure if that's ideal. Sjl197 (talk) 09:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Note, some like Mello-Leitão 1932 "Notas sobre ao Micratheneas do Brasil" get a hybrid version, which even differs from the likely source of those on World Spider Catalog: https://wsc.nmbe.ch/bibliography?bAuthors=&bYear=&bTitle=&bPublisher=Anais&bTaxonIncluded=&search=s
The ones for Opiliones (Harvestmen) are here instead https://mndi.museunacional.ufrj.br/aracnologia/pdfliteratura/papers%20m-l.htm

@Sjl197: Quickly checking Wiktionary, the Portuguese entries for anal and annal suggests that the spelling changed because of a spelling reform in Brazil in 1943? Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:44, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sjl197: Meanwhile ISSN Portal gives the "Annaes" spelling as a variant of the main "Anais" one, so it should be fine to use the same ISSN for them thankfully. Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:47, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, right, IPNI has separate entries for the two spellings [1] [2], that might be problematic for Wikidata when crossreferenced with the ISSN Portal data (?)... this page currently uses ISSN 0375-8281 for the older spelling, but ISSN Portal claims it as unreported. And yet at least one book from 1989 gives it as the ISSN of the older spelling(see here), which is rather odd. Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:55, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Monster Iestyn: Hey. Thanks for taking some thought. Well yes, seems we see the two different names as a continuation - i had no idea of a spelling reform around that time, but could be core explanation, with just academic journals getting in ahead of more widespread reform. The first word is a switch of spelling for "Annals" or such, the latter word for "science". Just to note - on the existing ISSN 0001-3765 page i've just removed the circumflex from the old spelling "Sciencias". Generally, the change looked like it was starting 1941. I checked what some pdfs showed, with multiple issues per year, see below. // For next step If ok for you, i'll switch title of those with references on wiki pages to the old title if from start->1940, and remained to the later revised title if 1941 onwards. Unfortunately the main source for spiders seems to use the later revised title every-time, regardless of year. and Others loading references onto wiki seem to have been confused or unaware. I'll leave all with the existing ISSN 0001-3765 for now unless i hear otherwise.

@Sjl197: Sounds good to me, those abbreviations from the papers (as well as the full journal names on the Opiliones papers' title pages at least) make it conclusive enough to me the switch was made in 1941 or at least volume 13 onwards. Monster Iestyn (talk) 18:18, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
