Holotype: MBUCV 32210 [ex FMNH 104020]. Paratypes: ANSP 161693-96 (31, 1, 2, 1); CAS 20108 (2), 20111 (1); FMNH 85515 (3), 103453 (1), 103447 (7), 104020 (32); INHS 62568 (1); INPA 21971 (5); MBUCV 25372 (20); SU 16275-76 (1, 2).
Type locality: Venezuela, Amazonas, Río Ventuari, pool behind beach on south side of river, about 12 kilometers above mouth of Río Ornico, Laguna Pavon (4°04'N, 66°56'W).[1]
Etymology: The specific name honors Richard Winterbottom, American ichthyologist from the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada.
