  • Holotype: MZUSP 34296.
  • Paratypes: numerous.

Type locality: Serra dos Carajás, bedrock at rio Itacaiunas, Serra dos Carajás, Pará, Brazil, 05032'00"W 0552'00"S.

Etymology: The specific epithet pitanga derives from Tupi-Guarani, meaning red, in allusion to the color of fins.
