Type locality: baia Sinhá Mariana, tributary of Cuiabá River, district of Barão de Melgaço, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Etymology: The species epithet pantanensis refers to the northern Pantanal region (Paraná-Paraguay basin) where this species has been exclusively found to date.
