By some authors, this species is included in Ouratea lucens, by others, Ouratea insulae and Ouratea pyramidalis are included in the synonymy of Ouratea lucens var. podogyna. However, in the draft treatment for Flora Mesoamericana by C. Whitefoord all these taxa are accepted as separate species.
