Type locality: Brazil, Amazonas, rio Tiquié, rio Negro drainage, igapó at Jabuti village, 0°16’31.9”N 69°53’36.4”W.[1]
Etymology: Mikia (mikiawu), after the common name employed by the Tuyuka indian people (who live at the upper rio Tiquié, the type locality) for the species of the Moenkhausia lepidura complex.
