Littorella P.J.Bergius, Kongl. Vetensk. Acad. Handl. 29: 341. (1768)

Type species: Littorella uniflora (L.) Asch., Fl. Brandenburg 1: 544 (1864) by monotypy, as the genus was originally described without reference to a type (ICN art 10.9 ex 16)

Native distribution areas are disjunct and by species, where Littorella americana is confined to North America, Littorella australis the Southern Cone and Littorella uniflora to Northern Europe.
