Diagnosis: Ab Lecanactis latebrarum erythrinicum et Trebouxia continens, acido leprarico et Trentepohlia nullo differt.

Type: U.S.A. CALIFORNIA: Santa Barbara Co., Transverse Range, Channel Islands National Park, Santa Rosa Island, Lobos Canyon at road crossing, Santa Rosa Island North Quad., 96 m, 34o 00' 10" N, 120o 05' 26" W, oaks, coastal sage shrubs, on exposed sandstone in canyon wall, 13 VI 2009, Knudsen 11401 (NY, holotype; UCR, isotype).

Etymology: The epithet insolita, meaning strange or unusual denotes the different photobiont of this species compared to the rest of genus and family.

Distribution: Known only from a handful of populations at two geographically restricted localities along the Pacific Coast.

Ecology: On sandstone in Lobos Canyon on Santa Rosa Island.
