Type: CANADA. British Columbia. Kispiox Valley, 36 km NNW of Kispiox, 55o36'N, 127o53'W, 750 m, interior cedar-hemlock zone/lower oroboreal subzone; open, humid toe position in degraded swamp; old-growth forest with Abies amabilis and Tsuga heterophylla; on branch of Tsuga, 23 Jun 1996, Goward 96-81 (UBC, holotype; OSC, UPS, isotypes).
Ecology and substrate: Hypogymnia canadensis occurs in cool, moist, conifer forests of the coastal mountains of western North America.
