Holotype: ROM 76339. Paratypes: BPBM 41084 (4); CAS 233514 (6); OMNH P38332 (1), P38333 (4), P38334 (1), P38335 (1); ROM 74893, 74922 (62), 84482 (1), 84498 (1), 88227 (14); USNM 402735 (4); WAM P.33535 (4).

Type locality: Palau Island, due west of Koror, 7°20'44.3"N, 134°16'47.2"E, depth 0-7.9 meters.[1]

Etymology: The specific epithet is an adjective combining the Latin atrus (= black) and venter (= belly), referring to the black pigment in the area of the abdomen.
