Type material. Holotype: ECOSC 775. Paratypes: AMNH 239190 (1); FMNH 117268 (1); IBUNAM 11436 (1); NMW 95100 (1); UABC 2665 (1); UMMZ 247665 (1).

Type locality: México, Chiapas, Marqués de Comillas, Lacandona Rainforest, río Lacantún, between Reforma Agraria and Galaxia, 16º14’35"N, 90º51’30"W.

Etymology: The species name honors the late Dr. José Luis Castro Aguirre, who made several important contributions to our understanding of Mexican fish fauna.
