Holotype: BMNH 1890.6.27.24. Paratypes: BMNH 1965.11.26.1-3 (3); SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 3844 (8), 5706 (2).

Type locality: Southwestern Indian Ocean, South Africa, Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth.[1]

Etymology: named in honour for Peter J.P. Whitehead, English ichthyologist.
