- Typus: Cyphorhinus thoracicus Tschudi, 1844, by monotypy.
- Etymology: Cyphorhinus from Ancient Greek κύφος (kúphos), meaning "hump" or "hunch", and ῥίς (rhís), meaning "nose" (or, in this case, bill).
