- Type locality: Academy Bay, I. Santa Cruz, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. (infrequent as dredged off Academy Bay.)
- Holotype: W.R. Taylor #34-318B; 1934-01-20; Hancock Foundation. (cystocarpic).
- Eponymy: named for George Frederik Papenfuss.
