Talk:Spermophilus
Add topicVernacular name for Spermophilus is Spermophilus?
This doesn't seem right. Ground squirrels seems pretty good to me. It includes most of the things that English speakers think are ground squirrels and it excludes things like prairie dogs, marmots and chipmunks which English speakers (if I'm a good example) don't think of as ground squirrels.
But even if you don't think ground squirrels is right Spermophilus doesn't exactly measure up to vernacular. I just don't recall anybody saying something like: "Oh look at that cute little sphermophilus over there".
I'd change it but my sense of it is that wikispecies people know a lot more about these things than I do and maybe you had your reasons.Davefoc 08:13, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
"Ground squirrel" also includes other species. Innotata (talk) 20:24, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Taxonomy
[edit]There has been a revision of this taxon, splitting it into 8 genera, see en:Spermophilus. Innotata (talk) 20:24, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Some of the genera recognised by the revision have been split from this page, but not all. This seem rather inconsistent. Innotata (talk) 18:21, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have changed a taxonomy with Helgen, Kristofer M.; Cole, F. Russel; Helgen, Lauren E.; and Wilson, Don E 2009. Generic Revision in the Holarctic Ground Squirrel Genus Spermophilus. Journal of Mammalogy, 90(2): 270–305. doi:10.1644/07-MAMM-A-309.1. http://www.mammalsociety.org/uploads/Helgen%20et%20al%202009.pdf. revision. That article from JM is very solid, and Don E.Wilson was one of authors. I am not only sure if Spermophilus (sensu lato) shouldn't be used as supergenus for all new genuses... - I don't see any mention of a supergenus in Helgen et al.; if this has not actually been used, can we? The revision is since the old Spermophilus was paraphyletic to Cynomys and other genera; do any of these take priority? Innotata (talk) 23:05, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
